    IR 3170ci

    Hi,
    I have a problems in IR 3170CI
Another problem occurs before reset the DC controller is display and error E00020-03a8, i turned off and on, then worked normally,
I noticed that when the machine run in adjusting gradation, I noticed the ITB ( I opened the cover of the ITB) a wide line of cyan in the width of the ITB, about 5 cm, while rotating the ITB sometime be cleaned and return again,
I change new drum and the counter is 1% but the color of the copy not good,

Image stabilization control/ this is a Canon Joke in this series

ATR control /corrects toner density (supply amount)

    Drum film thickness detection control
    /corrects development contrast

    Development contrast control
/determines appropriate primary charging DC bias and developing DC bias

    ATVC control
    /ensures good transfer

    PASCAL control
    /corrects image gradation density characteristics

    Development gradation density
correction control/corrects development gradation density characteristics

U need to check your fix unit surface temperature/ poor enviorment will cause Image stabilization control to activate in this crappy series-
if it detects poor warm up/ or changes in temperature of fuser during copying/printing

    - in principle, the machine does not execute image stability control;

however, it executes development gradation density correction if any of the following
    conditions exists:
    - there has been a significant change in the environment since the previous execution of the developing gradation density correction mechanism.
    - the cumulative number of copies has reached 200 if full color or 1000 if mono color.
    - the machine takes about 11 to 60 sec from when the main power switch is turned on to when it enters a standby state.

In service mode (Level 2) [COPIER> Option> BODY> BK-MD-SW], set it to "1" and turn the power OFF/ON.
With this setting change, the image stabilization control will be performed in monochrome mode instead of full-color mode, and accordingly the time required for the control can be shortened from about 3 and a half minutes to about 1 minute, which can improve the impression.
Note: As the following negative effects are possible with the setting change, inform your customer of them in advance before step 2 is performed.
    a. During the pre-rotation for the first color job after the setting has been changed to "1", the image stabilization control is executed in full-color mode.
Therefore, the first color job might take longer than before.

    b. After the setting has been changed to "1", if your customer keeps making monochrome output only (no color output), color toner will be replenished although it is not consumed at all. As a result, a symptom such as "color images are too dark" or "E020" might occur. (The occurrence timing might vary depending on how many times the temperature of the fixing roller becomes lower than 50 degrees C and how many pages the machine continuously outputs.)

Want to change intervals of image stabilization control / Want to decrease number of auto gradation correction--

Because of specification constraints, the settings of the image stabilization control timing cannot be changed. For the descriptions of the control timing,
refer to the Service Manual [Chapter 7 Image Formation > Image Stabilization Control].
When the following settings are effective, the intervals of this control will become longest.
    - In user mode [Common Settings> Energy Saver Mode> None (no recovery time)]
    - In user mode [Timer Settings> Auto Sleep Time > 4 hours]
    - In user mode [Timer Settings> Low-power Mode> 4 hours]
The control timing may vary depending on several factors such as output volume or fixing temperature.

bottom line/ purchase a iRC 5180 SERIES PRINTER/ there u can change image stabilization control

      Trouble Shooting error code E020-xx10, xx11, xx12, xx90, xx91, xx92, xx93, xxA0, xxA2, xxA8, xxA9.

There are several things that can cause E020???s; ATR Sensor, Patch Image Read Sensor, weak Developer, DC Controller and Drum Unit.
Some simple trouble shooting can help you isolate the problem.

      1. If possible make 10 color copies to force the ATR sensor to take readings. Then compare the SGNL reading for the color that is generating the error and additional colors in Service Mode; COPIER>DISPLAY>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M with the Initialization setting in COPIER>ADJUST>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M.

COPIER>DISPLAY>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M arethe ATR Sensor readings of the Developer in its present condition and should be within +/- 100 of the Initialization settings.

COPIER>ADJUST>DENS>SGNL-Y/C/M arethe Initialization settings that the copier maintains and are usually between 400 and 650

      2. If the Initialization setting is outside these numbers the Developer Unit will need to be replaced.

When replacing the Developer Unit, make sure to execute:
      - COPIER>FUNCTION>INSTALL>STIR-Y/C/M
      - COPIER>FUNCTION>INSTALL>INIT-Y/C/M
      - COPIER>FUNCTION>INSTALL>SPLY-H-Y/C/M
After Initializing the Developer Units print a P-print and keep with the copier.
      -COPIER>FUNCTION>MISC-P>P-PRINT

      3. If the ATR Sensor reading is over +/-100 of the Initialization setting; the ATR Sensor, Patch Image Read Sensor, Drum Unit and DC Controller are suspect.

Check the status of the Drum Unit under COPIER>DISPLAY>MISC>DRUM-LIFE. The Patch Image Read Sensor looks at a patch of toner that is generated on the drum for each color and determines the amount of toner that is in the patch by the amount of reflected light. If the drum is not creating the patch correctly, the patch reading will be affected. Replace the Drum Unit if it is close to or over 100% of its rated life.
If the Drum Unit is not close to or over its rated life, replace the ATR Sensor and Patch Image Read Sensor. If the error continues replace the DC Controller.

      5. If over toning continues to occur the Toner Supply Clutch (CL7) may be sticking and need to be replaced.

It sounds like the poster is not familiar with this machine. You say you replaced the drum, but did you clean the patch sensor? this is the single most important service task on this model, when the patch sensor starts to get dirty is performs auto gradations/image stabilization more often to compensate.

I hope the above helps, not only emphasizing what teckat has already posted but helps with some of the other aspects of having to deal with these massive piles of crap.

I do not make a habit of redistributing this type of material but I do believe in making sure any copier tech has access to this document. Please do not change it in any way. All infomation remeins the property of Canon Inc. and their subsidiaries, fair use intended, etc...

              hi,
yes I cleaned the patch sensor.

Many thanks to you, I appreciate this favor, you gave me and all that read these documents more knowledge about this terrible machine,
                thank you for your help

While I agree with Canon.Tech and other comments, these machines are similar to the IRC6800 Series Machines and sometimes one needs to look outside the Square, the Starter Material (Developer) leaks inside the Developing Sleeve which causes the Surface of the Sleeve NOT to hold the Dev and consequently overtones the Colour Unit also scattering that particular Colour Toner thoughout the Machine, vacout the machine & replacing the Starter will fix it temporarily, the only real fix is to replace the offending Colour Developer Unit and perform INIT in SRV Mode.
