    IRC 2880 through IRC3480

I have not worked on these models yet. Are they good boxes? I have serviced and sold the IR3035's etc but don't know much about this color machine. Any feed back appreciated. Thx.

    1- buy some manuals
2- see link below for demo copy process

    Multiple Pass

The four colour layers are transferred to the photo-receptive drum one after another and transferred to the Color Copy paper individually with a total of four rotations of the photo-receptive drum.

    Tandem System

This printing system contains four complete electrophotographic printing elements, one for each of the four colours. The four colour layers are transferred to the paper one after the other in a single pass.

    Transfer belt system

In the transfer belt process the colour layers are collected on the transfer belt, which is considerably more stable than paper, and then are transferred onto the paper in a single pass.

    The basics of electrophotographic technology

The electrophotographic process is based on the principles of positive & negative charges.
    1. A photoconductor is charged with static electricity.
    2. The photosensitive surface of the photoconductor is exposed to light, in this case in the form of a rotating laser beam.
    3. Where light hits the photoconductor, the charges are released, leaving the areas to be printed electrostatically charged.
    4. The toner (which is oppositely charged) is then attracted to the charged areas of the photoconductor.

The photoconductor, now carrying the image to be printed, rotates at the same speed as the paper moving through the printer or copier. As the paper, which carries an opposite charge to the toner, moves under the photoconductor, the toner particles are attracted to the paper’s surface, making the image visible. In the final step the toner is fixed on to the paper with heat and pressure.

    Main Methods of Electrophotographic Technology

The most common technology in digital colour laser printing – electrophotographic technology – has evolved over time improving both, the service and efficiency of machines.
There are three major models of electrophotographic technology:

I personally like them. Even more so than the newer adv c2030's. Normal drums, rollers and fusers. Only big issue I've had is the "insert black drum" message which is solved by replacing the ITB.

A bit drastic changing ITB UNIT because "insert black drum" message appears, normally a bit of cleaning/vac in and around ITB & machine contacts etc should fix it.

You would think it'd be that easy. Cleaning doesn't work 95% of the time for me personally.

                  Toner level detection
To execute correct toner feeding, this machine has a toner feed level sensor (PS3~PS6).
This sensor detects the sensor flag mounted on the shaft of the feed screw.
This sensor flag executes reciprocating movement by the drive of the toner feed motor. It is the structure that the toner feed screw rotates and the specified amount of toner is fed to the drum unit when the sensor flag moves back and forth once.
At the time of the toner feeding, DC controller monitors this sensor while driving the toner feed motor. The toner
feed motor is stopped when the toner feeding is completed.
By executing this, the toner feeding is correctly implemented

                  Machine supplies toner as follows:
The toner coming from the hopper assembly is moved to the toner transport feed-screw A of the drum unit; then>it is moved farther by the toner transport feed-screw B while being mixed with carrier to reach the developing
                  cylinder.

explanation of the toner feed route.
After a toner retainer is set to the main body, the toner is sent to the hopper assembly.
The toner sent to the hopper assembly is fed to the drum unit by the toner feed screw.

Toner retainers for Y, M, C and Bk. The retainer for each color is composed of toner and a stirring plate.
The electric load used for the feed route is the following three varieties and twelve loads.

                  - Motor: One variety, four motors used (toner feed motor)
                  - Sensor: Two varieties, eight sensors used (toner feed level sensor, toner residual level sensor)

M8 through M11: Toner feed motor
PS3 through PS6: Toner feed level sensor
TS1 through TS4: Toner residual level sensor (piezosensor)

Two kinds of toner feeding, one is 'hopper feeding' from the toner retainer to the hopper assembly and another is 'drum feeding' from the hopper assembly to the drum unit.
                  - Hopper toner refill
When the toner container is set in the main unit, the toner falls automatically into the hopper.
Also, during toner refill, the toner refill motors (M8 to M11) rotate forwards, causing the stirring plate and
stirring spring to rotate, making it easier for the toner to fall out.
                  - Drum unit toner refill
Drum feeding is executed by the toner feed motor (M8 to M11). By the negative rotation (CCW) of the toner
feed motor (M8 to M11), the agitating plate, the scraping spring and the toner feed screw are activated, and
the toner on the hopper assembly is feed to the drum unit.
The above operations are controlled by the DC controller. The DC controller computes the amount of toner
used from the ATR control results, uses this information to judge how long the toner refill motor should be
driven, and thus supplies the required amount of refill toner to the drum.

KNOCK - KNOCK - HELLOOOO!!! Teckat has given you more info than some Canon Techs would even bother searching for, something is stopping the Unit from registering the Values which it requires, there WILL be a Sensor covered (with toner) and/or a supply tube blocked, remove the Toner Cover > the PCB and clean the sensors, you may also need to remove the Toner Hopper Assy (if there is a blockage or broken Auger) in which case you will need the Manual and i'm sure Paul can accomodate you with that.
