    canon ir6570 sst error code E240 & E190

Hi to all canon gurus out there. I am trying to flash iR 6570 to get rid of the error code e602-1000. The original hdd is a Hitachi travel star: Model HTS 541020G9AT00; 20GB, 5400RPM. This part is hard to get locally here. I have checked it in the 'firmware-HD Format file, it seems not to have a 'hdd descriptor file'....(meaning no equivalent). I decided to try a FUJITSU hard disk model: MHT 2040AH; 40GB; 5400PM. From the info i gathered from the internet, the two have very close specifications..almost similar, save for the GB.
    - I am using crossover Ethernet cable, set my laptop ip address to 172.16.1.101, sub net mask 255.255.0.0, the copier has fixed ip address of 172.16.1.100, so I'm in same range of ip address, of class B network. Using SST version 4.63, and firmware version 42.01.
Problem: When I try HDD Formatting, I get an error code E240 on the SST screen shot, saying 'process has ended in error; File name:HDD Format ALL: Module: Send File(). While the copier screen displays : 'Formatting HDD (ALL) Error.'
_I switched to the older SST version 3.35, still I get the formatting error E190.

Question: 1)- Is my choice of of equivalent Fujitsu HDD (above) as a replacement drive ok, or the original drives are encrypted and must be exact replacement?
2)- what does the error code E240, E190 represent?
3)- What am I not doing right? What's the way forward?
Thanks in advance for your timely response.

1-u can only have one version of SST installed on laptop

    E240
    =communication/connection issue
E190=communication error between the Service Support Tool and the Hard Drive.
-Be sure to re-seat all connections on the HDD and HDD connections at the Main Controller

E190 and E240 Error Codes in Service Support Tool when trying to Format HDD
    -remove the Boot Rom>clean contacts>re-seat-
    >as well as clean the Boot socket on the Main Controller

if i'm not wrong that model already has the encrypted firmware so you will have to get a canon original HD or at least get the same models from somewhere else, don't go by specs go by same models, i'd go with teckat's choices, you'll get a fully compatible HD instead of buying random HDs until you get one the firmware recognizes.

There are no encrypted files on the HDD's for these models. The SST reads the SN of the HDD and if the SN does not match the information on your SST HDD format file you will get an error. It is best to install the latest *.ift files that Canon releases for the model you are working on when installating a new HDD.

yes you are right, but i was refering to the firmware being encrypted itself, since on the newer firmwares you cant open the .ift files on a readable manner so you cannot add the serial/ model you need as was done with the IR2200/3300 series. since that change you can only put in a HD model equal to the ones canon sells, but as far as i know if you get the same model HD from somewhere else you can use it, but never tried it.

            note:
            iRXXXX.itf files are always encrypted.

            iRModel-XXxx####-HDFormat.ift

iRModel: This will be the model designation for the unit. iR2200 for example.
XX: A double X appears in this position for all such files.
xx: This is the language designator for the firmware files. Since the HDD file is universal this is always xx.
####: This is a version number which will correspond to the firmware version number you see in the SST.
HDFormat: The type of file which is always HDFormat for the HDD Desriptor file.
.ift: The Windows file type. This is used for all Canon Firmware files.

the encrypted .itf files are the HDD Descriptor Files which contains the descriptor information for each HDD registered for the Canon model.
also encrypted in there is the # Download Module,# Download Interface,# Machine name,# Logical unit ID (in HEX),# Logical unit name,# Program code version,# Country + Language + OEM code + Paper size code + Version),# Maximum waiting time for response ([sec] in HEX),# Supported number of HDD type,# Format timeout,# Total number of partitions,# Partition name,# Partition ID,BTTN 1 BPTN /BOOTDEV

Thank you all gentlemen for your advices and the fast response. Thanks also for the link teckat, I've opted to get the original service part HDD from the parts vendor. I'll give a feedback to the forum when I'm through with the job.
