    Canon IR5055 hard drives

    Hey guys,
I need your help again. I am replacing hard drives in several IR5055, 5065, 5075 series Canons and am trying to load the system software. I am using Service Support Tool v4.52 and a crossover cable. First of all, I found that you can not get one of these machines into fixed IP mode with a blank hard drive. I've tried on several machines and it just doesn't work. I hold down the 1 and 7 keys while I power on and it just goes into E602 and never fixed IP mode. It doesn't matter how long I hold the keys. It will go into regular download mode with the 2 and 8 keys. Then I found that even with the software loaded and registered in SST, it doesn't come up as a selection when I click the drop down arrow to select a machine to flash. I have system software IR5075 v3 and IRYYYY for the HD format, which are used for the whole 5055 series. I even tried deleting the software and re-registering it, but it won't show up in the drop down menu. I also tried assist mode, but it tells me the correct software is not registered and as I said, I know it is. I look under registered software and there it is.
Any words of wisdom or guidance? What am I doing wrong or failing to do? I flash hard drives all the time with no problems. I just did about 15 5001's. Unfortunately, I don't have the service manual for the 5055 series, so maybe there is a different procedure for flashing these.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

holding down 2 & 8 while powering on the device
The format function is only available in Safe Mode

      then open SST

U select SINGLE-- > then SELECT START>to FORMAT see below/click on pic
after FORMAT > USE Start Assist or ALL-HDF

To use SST with fixed IP mode, make sure your PC's IP is 172.19.1.10 and subnet 255.255.255.0.
Like Teckat says fixed IP works only in Safe Mode ( * 28 *).

          Hi,

If your SST had been used for firmware upgrade on iR copiers, no reasons it should not work.

Have you try using a USB stick to copy via SST? Plug into the copier; Power ON while holding 28. LCD will have a set of menus to format HDD / Reload firmware / etc....

with 2 & 8 keys on the control panel pressed until "Download mode" is indicated on the LCD display.
This will boot the iR with a fixed IP address of 172.16.1.100 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 2) Now give your laptop/PC an IP address of 172.16.1.10 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
            3) Make sure you are able to Ping 172.16.1.100 from your laptop to ensure connectivity to the iR.

            4) Open Service Support Tool (SST)

Just a bit of clarification from you Sir, or any network guru, probably the ''Sub net Mask information'' I do have in my possession is obsolete and needs an 'upgrade' too. BUT Doesn't the IP Address 172.16.1.100 or 172.19.1.10 and generally the 172.x.x.x, fall OUTSIDE the range of the sub net mask 255.255.255.0? I ask this because this 'fixed' IP address 172.16.1.10, like all others in that range of (172.x.x.x), is a 'Class B' network address, that are normally allocated (or falls under) the sub net mask '255.255.0.0', and NOT '255.255.255.0' which itself, is the sub net mask allocated for the 'Class C' network addresses of 192.168.x.x etc. In such a case,[ of 'wrongful' allocation of resource....I presume], will network traffic across the devices be supported?
              - I also say this because whenever i configure my laptop IP address to any 172.x.x.x range and then CLICK in the Sub net mask FORM to enter the sub net number, the computer AUTOMATICALLY configures and display for me the sub net mask no. 255.255.0.0, a class B network; A similar thing happens when i put a 'Class C' IP Address of 192.168.x.x, I get the sub net mask 255.255.255.0 displayed auto.
              - Now, is the 'fixed IP Address' 172.16.1.100 'Classless' or special?

                Hi,

Your understanding of subnet mask is correct and in need of any "upgrade"

For Canon's Fixed IP mode, it purpose is to have an easier access to machine's connectivity without having to change the default configured iP address of the Customer's network. Do remember it via a single PC to the Canon copier so do not really need that many nodes in a networks.

Above short description is just my "layman" understanding, if you are to dive deeper for more, most probably I will be lost too.

Your explanation is true, even the 'Device specific notes' section in the SST manuals state that. But still it doesn't answer my question as to 'why' this 'fixed i.p address' should 'break' one of the rules or standard protocols for network communication as set by the IEEE. I have pondered over this issue for a long time, did a lot of searching on the internet but can't get any technical justification, for assigning a 'Class C' sub net mask (255.255.255.0) to a 'Class B' network i.p address of 172.x.x.x.
                  The search continues.

Sorry guyz, probably I should have posted my question in the 'Connectivity' forum. However I have zeroed on this possible 'answer' to that question, I would like to share with you:
                      - The fixed i.p address 172.x.x.x under sub net mask 255.255.255.0 support a form of 'UNICAST' Network Transmission. This is the sending of information packets to a single network node. It is used where a private or UNIQUE Resource such as media servers are being requested for 2-way connections that are needed to complete the connection. A CLIENT system may make the request for streaming content from the single source {SST\Firmware} and, the responding system[host machine] may leverage UNICAST as part of the response for the session request to deliver the content.
                      - Technically, it is a function(or feature) in the MAC Address of the Network Interface card; in the Link Layer Networking protocol [OSI Layer 2 protocol]. For certain Canon devices which support this fixed i.p address, Canon (at the time of manufacture), has set to '0', as 'Least Significant(bit) of ,the Most Significant octet(byte) of the
MAC Address. The frame is meant to reach only one receiving NIC. *The sub net mask 255.255.255.0 is chosen for this unicast mode because technically it accommodates only 1 Sub net.

Hey guys, Just an update. Thanks for all the suggestions, but I was never getting to the screens that you were telling me about. Teckat, I never got to the screen that let me select the IR 5075 software or Single. KL568, I tried the USB option, but the IR5075 was not listed. Anyway, I found out that my version of the IR5075 software was not complete. I got the full version from a co-worker and loaded that and was able to start flashing. I am encountering another issue now, it seems that the software or machine itself is very particular about the hard drives. Some hard drives flash fine and others create an error code 240 in the SST and fail to format. I have 2 IR5055's next to each other that I'm using to flash and out of a box of about 40 hard drives, only 7 were successful. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it either. The ones that flashed are different brands and model numbers. Some of the ones that didn't flash are the same brands and model numbers. I looked up error code 240 here on the forum, but the only thing I found was about the boot rom connection and I reseated that. And it's happening with 2 different copiers. Any suggestions, guys? Does anyone have a list of SST error codes? There's not one in the SST manual. Thanks again for any help you can give. Sorry for the formatting of this message, but my company just got me a new laptop with Windows 8 and I can't get it to do line breaks between paragraphs.

One more update, guys. The 240 error code in the SST was incompatibility with certain hard drives. I started comparing the ones that flashed successfully and there was a pattern. Certain brands and model numbers work and others don't. So I'm starting a list for future reference. Thanks again for all the help.
