iR 5020 bad hdd

Okay, total noob so I recognize the hazing and stereotype of a first post and already asking for something.

Apologies in advance.

I've got a iR 5020 with a bad hard drive (was get 602 errors, download mode, etc).

Here are my questions:

Am I right that if I were to try and swap the hard drive I'd need the same model Samsung drive, the SST, a crossover cable, and the correct firmware?

Do people sell these replacement drives pre-formatted? So I could simply swap the drives?

Lastly, can anyone suggest a good independent tech in LA? I work at a small non-profit and we're trying to pinch pennies to prevent laying anyone else off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, my apologies for a first post that's an 'ask'.

Hi, you need to check either your new hardrive is recognizable by HDFormat.ift (unless you are going to clone process)
Check either your machine come with N or C version to load proper firmware
Use Bi-directional cable if cross-over cable doesnt work.

Its cheaper if you can do it your own since you got computer knowledge
You just need to get a suitable hardisk.
In my country it will cost me few hundred bucks if ask for onsite for e602
If you can do it your own it only cost not more than 20 bucks

hold down the 1 and 9 keys at the same time and turn on the power so that the device will perform a hard disk write abort error recovery session. (it's a DEFRAG)
This processing requires checking the entire HDD in units of sectors, and will take several tens of minutes.

u will see white blocks dropping on screen> when finished if u see DOWNLOAD on LCD/ POWER OFF/ON PRINTER

u may get lucky

Thanks so much for the really helpful info.

Tried the defrag process and it stalled out (repeatedly) after about the fourth line from the bottom. Let it run for over an hour and no progress.

Bad hdd, yes?

So I went ahead and ordered a refurbished drive online.

What do I need to format the drive?

You have to have Canon's SST and the System Software to load back on the hard drive to get it working. You have to use Canon's SST to format before you can load the software. The Canon SST it is proprietary.
