I am still using the starter cartridges on this. The printer count says 289 for the black cartridge and the toner level says OK for all, but I am getting an message on the display "check black cartridge". It is printing fine after I click OK to clear the message. I hate to buy an expensive new toner cartridge if there is another issue causing this to happen.

contacts may need cleaning -(alcohol -very damp cloth)
remove ink black cartridge-you will see metal connectors on the cartridge
look in & check interior contacts
be careful> u don't want static charges from your person on contacts**Knowledge is time consuming, exhausting and costly for a trained Tech.**

I cleaned the interior contact that I could get at without removing the toner tray because I don't know how to remove the tray.
I have the repair manual, but I am hesitant about getting in over my head.Comment
