[Jamming] Canon IRC 3170i jamming after first page

    Hi,

I have been scouring the forums, but haven't seen this particular issue yet:

Copier prints out one single page just fine, every time. However, when more printing or copying more than one page the paper jams randomly on the second or third sheet. I have checked all rollers, but nothing seems wrong. Fixing and pressure rollers are in good shape too. Any advice?

    Thanks,
    TCSL

    Hi,
You did not show which part of the copier the jam occur. That can help very much in diagnosing the cause.

      Jam code?
      All sources?
      All paper size's?
      Both duplex and single sided?

      Yes, I am a nerd.
Gaming PC - check. Raspberry Pi - Check. Custom ROM on phone - check. Thick glasses - check.

        Thanks,

All sources, tried cassettes 1 through 4.
No problem with A3, but A4 gets stuck every time. Tried 80gm and 75gm, and same jamming.
Jamming happens on both duplex and single-sided, so I have pretty much ruled out duplexer et al.
I'll get back to you with the jam code as I have been away from that machine for a couple of days

I'll post some pictures, but.... it has jammed almost everywhere, hence the difficulty in pinpointing where the jam is.

When we send out a print job or multiple copies you get a jam error after the first duplex or after the first single-sided sheet. On opening the unit, paper is jammed at the feeder, in the fixing unit, and at the top underneath the glass just before it exits finished.

FYI, print quality is fine (at least, on what actually makes it out!)

Hi, you are obviously new to Canon Boxes however the machine will tell all the problems it has, enter Service Mode > Press the ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS button then > 2+8 together > then ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS button again, this will put you into S. Mode > then COPIER > DISPLAY > JAM and POST the Codes - this will assist in others assisting you.
Check the Dial on the front of the Cassette matches the orientation of the Paper.

Sorry for the wait... Jam Codes are:
              0D91
              010A
              0A05
              0201
              0105
              0101
              0102

All dials match what is displayed.

              Thanks for the help.

Which is the code that happens when it jams. When the machine it jammed go into SM and tell us which jam.
                0101- jam tray 1
                0102- tray 2
                0105 delay at registration.

When's the last time a set of proper ppu's has been installed?

                  Last jam was 0D91.

Paper pickups were replaced less than 6 months ago

0d91 is a paper size mismatch. Check the dial to verify that it is correctly relating to what's in the tray.
With the age of the 3100 I'd probably take a look at the registration flag as it has a pad that gets sticky and the standoff gets worn down and throws off timing.

EDIT: The part number for the registration sensor flag is FC5-0484-000

Re: Canon IRC 3170i jamming after first page

Along with jam code, post the source tray. I have seen cas 1 retry sensor jams when paper is fed from another cassette. The cas 1 retry sensor acts as a kind of vertical path sensor when fed from other trays. Sometimes it is worn to a point it will not jam when feeding from cas 1 because the paper hits the actuator at a different angle when fed from cassette 1 as opposed to another cassette. Paper goes right by it. Check the retry sensor actuators on all upper cassettes and the pre-reg sensor actuator for wear and as mentioned, for the damper causing it to stick. Pull the dampers off the door for the lower diverter and also for the upper/duplex diverter. If your getting OD91 and dial settings are ok on cassettes, lead edge could be passing over pre-reg actuator, causing late actuation of the pre-reg sensor which effectively decreases timing window between pre-reg and fixing sensor. If machine has over 200k on it,I would suspect these.

Thanks, I'll take your advice and post once I get a chance to look more closely at the registration points.
