    imagerunner 2870 with E602/001 code

So I bought this copier from my lease end dealer and as you can see there is a hard drive missing from this copier which probably explains the E602/001 code.

I happened to have a hard drive from an ir4570 cannibal machine, at least I think it is. So why does it not just drop straight in as it should?

here's a closer look at the hard drive.

I've never really installed a hard drive into any Canon copier, though it's funny but I've been doing this racket for years and years so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Apart from the holding aspect, does the caddy do anything else that would cause the hard drive to not be read? Perhaps does it maybe also jumper those final 4 pins on the drive?

Yes the caddy is just a holder nothing more. You can't fit another HDD from a different model unless it was an identical model etc.

you'll need to reinstall the system software on that HDD to use the machine.

          oh nuts.

This problem is more than likely going to be the end of all imagerunners due to the fear of information theft from the current owner. I have several clients that have taped to their copiers that state that the "Hard drive" must be pulled when the lease ends. There had been a news article about this circulating that had scared a lot of people, even those that have nothing worth stealing.

image overwrite. The news article is archaic and only really affects the first line of imagerunners, eg 2200 gp210, etc... We bill them the cost of a new ORM hard drive when they want to pull that bullshit on us because we're screwed after we take a machine back and have to lose 500$ish on a new OEM HDD. Tell your clients that it's old news and all image data is encrypted with keys that we can't even get our hands on.

" All Canon imageRUNNER devices equipped with HDD have standard features in place to protect the information on their internal hard drive image servers and prevent the misuse or theft of the stored data. The image data from routine job processing during copying, printing, scanning and faxing is temporarily written to the HDD in a proprietary Canon file format. This file format is not compatible with file systems commonly used and not useful outside of the imageRUNNER device. The HDD directory information is also stored on a separate system board, making file reconstruction infeasible in the event the HDD was removed. Furthermore, all temporary and permanent data written to the hard drive is written in random, non-contiguous locations on the hard disk drive. The compressed data can, in turn, only be read by an imageRUNNER device using the proprietary format, which is integral to the operating system of the device, making the stored data highly secure."

besides all newer models (after IR2200/3300) have secure ways to clear the hard drive by service mode, now you need the caddy, SST and the firmware to put it to work, and also you need a specific brand and model of hard drive since the firmware is model and brand sensitive, so probably a oem canon part (quite expensive) or i think someone pointed a website you can get the part for a better price than OEM

Normally I use the disk ultility tool to restore the disk image to new HDD, the HDD can be allmost any maker, range from 20GB to 160GB.
The the disk image i use was captured at the time where SST had transfere all data to HDD. In this way, all new HDD with this image will perform Boot ROM, DCon,,,update at first power on.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll print out a few of those pdf files and present them to these clients that have decided to yank the HD in hopes of persuading them to keep it all in tact. Well, I guess not all is lost, I guess I can toss the copier in the parts for sale thread and probably recover most of my expenses.
