    Uneven Door on Cassette Tray 2 - IR-ADV C2230

    Hi everyone.

This is not a technical issue - just a mere cosmetic problem that seems to be "normal."

The door on the second cassette tray isn't in alignment with the first cassette drawer. I can adjust the screw on the left side of the drawer and match it well but the right side is problematic. The white latching mechanism that expands when you push in the button is not long enough - or the metal catch on the rail that the latch fastens to is set to far back in the machine. I've taken a look at both areas to see if either can be adjusted and it can't. Is this common with canon copiers? Attached are two pictures so you can get an idea. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Whoever put the machine on the cabinet screwed up. Take out the tray I bet the bottom plate of the machine has been flexed from the pin on the cabiinet

      I will check it out.

Is the pin in the picture below? How do I fix this if that is the problem? Thanks!

That won't be a problem as every machine has one identical for a standoff. Check the physical metal being bent. There's two pins on the cabinet that sit in holes on the underneath of the machine. If weak ass people try to lift the machine and drop it on the pin, it can do that. Or it got lifted by the tray itself at which point it might be worthwhile to go back with a similar tray to see if it's just that. Try one from another good machine and see if it's still offset

I checked the cabinet and it seems on okay. It actually seems like the cover on tray one isn't snug. Can it be tightened?

No one else has or had this issue?

The more I examine it, the more convinced I am that it seems like paper tray one is problematic. The cassette covers are the same, but there are not adjustment mechanism on tray 1. The right side of tray 1 has a significant gap on the right and sits tight on the left side as a narrow one on the left. Even the front of door 1 is offset to the left of the machine. Maybe the tray itself is skewed. I can't compare because it is the only Canon in the building.

Why does Canon allow for the paper tray 2 door to be adjusted and not paper tray 1 door? Even so, paper tray 2 door can only be adjusted on the left.

Even if this is normal, it is definitely a QC on Canon's part. The machine works fine, but it's comparable to a brick wall that wasn't leveled properly and looks sloppy.

I'd hate to purchase a new cassette tray and find that the problem still exists. Does Canon warranty new machines if they aren't on service contract?

After about 10 tries I think I see what your issue.
I have seen the issue in the first photo on older models, but I left it alone after checking that the pin was in the right place and it copied perfectly

                  During the manufacturing process, it is usual for components to go out of specifications or tolerance limits;
Only last week I purchased a new canon drum for iR2530 copier and when I tried to install it inside the machine , the machine would display 'Insert drum unit'. Whenever I could put back in the old drum unit I had removed, the message clears; insert the new unit, the message is back. I knew then that somehow the new unit was out of specification. I stripped it to find out why, I made a physical comparison of the old and new drum cylinders by placing and aligning them side by side on a flat surface, and noticed that the new drum cylinder was slightly shorter than the old one. That would mean the bias or grounding metal plate inside the cylinder was not reaching to make proper contact or no contact at all with the point inside the rear of the machine. I proved this further by putting the old cylinder into the new drum assembly in place of the new cylinder and the machine sensed it, i.e no error message...'insert drum unit'. I then drew my conclusion.
Work around: I placed a plastic washer of a reasonable thickness at the front end of the new drum cylinder, between the plastic end of the drum and the assembly to 'elongate' the drum, so that its contact plate was able to reach the contact at the rear end of the machine. It worked, so far no complaint.

I'm impressed - we would normally claim warranty on these - thanks for the tip.

So I shouldn't be concerned then?

No, so long as the copier is placing the image in the centre it will not be a problem.
