I have an iPF5100 installed in a post-secondary computer print lab, and am getting error: E196-404C quickly followed by a message to "Close the upper cover." I replaced a print head on this printer last week due to error: E161-403F …and it was printing heavily without issue for about a week.
This new error appears to be, from what I can tell in the Service Manual I have, a Serial number mismatch between boards which can be fixed by a retry of the PCB Replacement Mode. Firstly, I'm not sure why this error is happening as I've not changed any board ever on this printer, and secondly, I'm unsure why I can't get the printer into service mode now to retry the PCB Replacement Mode.
Since these are in a print lab that students have access to 20 hours a day I'm wondering if it is possible a student accidentally or maliciously caused this problem, and more importantly what I can do to resolve the likely problem.
Any information or direction on this would be greatly appreciated. From what I've read in a few posts here, I think maybe a firmware update might fix it, but I don't want to try this without confirmation from someone more knowledgeable.
