anybody know what operating system canon uses to to communicate with the hard drive. dont say sst. what i mean is, is it like linux or is it just a canon thing that you cant hack. I can see the partitions but cant see whats in it other than looking at a disk editor to see the bits in hex etc. I want to hook up to my computer and read the contents. i have acronis, ghost and partition magic.

From what I get from Canon their OS is Canon exclusive. This is for security reasons.Like the United States Postal Service It's a miracle it works! -
Canon use a proprietary OS on their machines. Usually the first few partitions are used as a scratch pad area for storing the image data as it processes each job. Other partitions usually store user data and settings and generally the last partition contains all the system software of the machine.
If you wanted to look at the system software it might be easier to disect the SST files for the machine as the contents are essentially the same as whats on the HDD but in compressed form.
A good starting point might be the MEAP architecture since it is Java based.
The only time I have seen a Canon device with a standard OS was some of their early document scanners ran Win98, I even had one BSOD on me once.No, I will not send you Manuals, Software or your own little repair Genie to fix all your problems for you.
