    Ghosting on IRAc5030

I have two IRAc5030's that are producing ghost images (i.e. a faint image from the previous page appears). Only black is affected, the colors are fine. Replacing the black drum assembly (Genuine Canon) had no effect. Any ideas? For what it's worth the toner is generic as is the waste container. Everything else is genuine Canon parts. The fuser rollers and the ITB appear to be clean.
Both problem units were shipped to Texas from Virginia. Both worked fine for several months and then developed the same problem within two weeks of each other. A third machine, part of the same shipment, does not exhibit this problem.
The Canon service manual hasn't been much help.

    Many thanks!

the fact that only the black is affected by ghosting - rules out the itb cleaning asy
the fact that you replaced the black drum - rules out the cleaning blade of the drum

so I guess the toner particles of the generic toner may not be the same size of the oem toner.

did you try the oem toner for a change ?

Try to swap black drum unit from the working machine and put it in the faulty machine to see if there is any difference.
Can be only to things in your problem. The one is bad drum units even they are genuine. And the second is dirty laser optics of black drum (so rare to happen).

We're going to switch to OEM black toner this morning. I plan to change the toner, run a bunch of solid black pages to purge the system of some of the generic toner and then check for improvement. I'll post my findings.

Switching to genuine Canon black toner seems to have fixed the problem. After installing the canon cartridge I ran about 40 copies with large black areas to purge most of the generic toner from the machine. After a day and a half the problem has not returned.
One more interesting thing: I noticed that a brand new black Canon cartridge was considerably heavier than a new generic cartridge. Also, one of the users remarked that the black cartridges seem to run out really fast. That machine was also using generic black. So it appears that the genuine toner lasts longer as well. Between that and the reduced service costs the Canon toner is the better bargain.

Color printing has not suffered this problem as yet, but I will be investigating the cost per page for color as well. I'll report on that soon.

with the risk of sounding corperate, you should always use canon genuine toner in the IRA series, the knock off brands just don't cut it and while the machines are good overall they are fussy machines about what gets put in them.

The OEM toner does have some iron in it - Canon stuff is way heavier than most I have noticed.
