    Connect IR c5180 to OSX

I have spent the past few hours trying to get a Canon ImageRunner C5180 to send scanned files to a Mac computer running OSx. I need to set this up on computers running OSX 10.9 and 10.7.

I have enabled SMB file sharing on the Mac but I still can't get it to work. Is this possible? Can someone direct me to a tutorial that walks me through all the necessary steps?

I am successfully sending to multiple Windows 7 computers, so the network itself shouldn't be a problem.

    Thanks in advance.

Title : Push Scanning via SMB to a Mac OS X Computer

Question : Can Canon Universal Send devices push scan via SMB to a Mac OS X 10.2.x, 10.3.x, 10.4.x computer? How do you set it up?

Answer : * Sending via SMB to a non-Windows computer system is not officially supported by Canon.

Mac OS X Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger run Samba by default as part of their Unix-based Operating System. This allows the sharing of files between Mac OS X computers and Windows computers via SMB. When you log into Mac OS X with a user account, you work from the user account's home directory. It is this home directory that will be 'shared out'.

To manually configure a SMB destination on the Canon device for a folder on a Mac OS X computer, enter the following information:

    For example,

Alternatively, you can browse to the Mac OS X computer from the copier when setting up your SMB destination. In order to see it in the Browse window on the copier, the Mac OS X system may need to be made part of the workgroup.

To add your Mac OS X system to a Windows Workgroup:

    1. On the Mac, open a new Finder window.

    2. Select the Applications tab.

    3. Open the Utilities folder.

    4. Launch the Directory Access utility.

    5. Enable SMB on the Services tab.

    6. Highlight SMB and hit the Configure button.

    7. Enter your Workgroup name and the ip address of your WINS Server (if applicable).

    8. Hit OK.

SMB directory access and Windows Sharing must be enabled to send from the copier via SMB to the Mac OS X system. To enable SMB directory access, follow the steps listed above.

To add your Mac Leopard OS X 10.5 system to a Windows Workgroup:

    1. Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

    2. Select the Network applet under the 'Internet & Network' section.

    3. Click on the 'Advanced...' button

    4. Under the WINS header enter your Windows workgroup name in the 'Workgroup:' field

    5. Click 'OK'

    6. The MAC 10.5 workstation must be rebooted for the change to take effect

To enable Windows Sharing on your Mac OS X system:

    1. Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

    2. Select the Sharing applet under the 'Internet & Network' section.

    3. On the Services tab, enable Windows Sharing.

    * Note - You must also enable the specific user accounts that will be allowed for SMB sharing on this screen in Mac OS 10.4.x Tiger.

To enable Windows Sharing on your Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 system:

    1. Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.

    2. Select the Sharing applet under the 'Internet & Network' section.

    3. Highlight 'File Sharing' as shown below:

    4. Click on 'Options...' and check 'Share Files and folders using SMB' and click 'Done'

    6. You can then go back to the File Sharing menu and add folders and set permissions as desired

Re: Connect IR c5180 to OSX

The specific details on how to configure WINS and sharing varies with the OSX version. Following your guide, however, I was able to set up my mac so that folder sharing works from a Windows 7 PC. I can now browse to the server from the printer but the Canon still fails to send. I have tried authenticating using a Guest user, a dedicated sharing user, as well as an administrator user.

Can anyone with experience provide some more insight?

In regards to scanning from a Canon ImageRunner to a Mac, this used to be done via SMB. But then Apple modernized the SMB protocol in Lion & Mountain Lion & Mavericks, and Canon decided to remain in the dark ages with their old-fashioned SMB protocol support.
So therefore, Canon ImageRunners are now incompatible with Lion (OS X 10.7) & Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) & Mavericks (OS X 10.9) for scanning via SMB. The solution is that we now have to use the FTP protocol for scanning, when scanning from a Canon ImageRunner to a Mac running Lion (OS X 10.7) or Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) or Mavericks (OS X 10.9).

To use the FTP protocol, you first need to enable it on your Mac by going into the Terminal and typing this command: sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist After enabling FTP via the Terminal, go into the Sharing system preference. Enable File Sharing in the left margin. Add the shared folder where you want the scans to end up.
We usually like to create a folder on the Desktop entitled “Canon Scans”, so you can just drag this folder into the list of folders. Click on the “Options” button to make sure that AFP is enabled, but you do NOT need to enable SMB.
Now you can go into the Network system preference where you will need to manually assign a static IP address for your machine. The Canon ImageRunner will need this static IP address so that it can find your Mac. Once you’ve done all of the above, you can now create a new “one touch entry” on the Canon ImageRunner printer to scan to the shared folder on the Mac.

To do this, click on the physical button on the copier that says “Additional Functions”, then press “Address Book Settings”. Then, on the Canon ImageRunner screen, press “One Touch Buttons”. On the next screen, press an existing name to edit it, or press a numbered button to edit a new name. (You can scroll through the pages with the arrows on the right.) You must press the ”Register/Edit” button to add or edit that button. If you’re adding a new button, then on the next screen, you’ll have to press “File”. Then you’ll be taken to the next screen. The information to type in is the following: Name: Give the button a name

One-touch Button Name: Give the button a short name that will fit on a button.
            Protocol: FTP
Host Name: The static IP address that you assigned to the Mac. Do NOT use any special characters or slashes… just enter the IP address.
            Folder Path: shared folder name.
The trick to this is that you have to give the path from the starting point of the home folder. So if the shared folder is named “Canon Scans” and it sits on the desktop, then type in this file path: “Desktop/Canon Scans” (without the quotes).
User: the full account name of the account which owns the shared folder.
Password: the password for the account which owns the shared folder. And that’s it! You are now all set to scan from your Canon ImageRunner to your Mac!

Yes, I see a SEND tab, and as I mentioned, I can successfully send to a Windows machine.
