    Code E0020

    I have a c5030 that intermittently refuses to print. The display panel indicates "Check the printer. Call service representative."
    The error log shows several occurrences of the following error:
    Code = E0020
    DTL = 0104
    L = 05
    P = 0D

    The service manual indicates that that this is a UFDI Communication error. (I think that's what it's telling me).

    Any ideas?

    e020 are density/drum codes.

    Replace patch sensor unit and black drum.

    Part numbers as follows: Patch Sensor Unit =FM3-5944-010, GPR-30 Black Drum - 2776B004BA, GPR-31
    Black Drum - 2778B004BA

    Initialization of patch sensor is necessary. COPIER>OPTION>IMG-MCON>P-ALPHA>Input Patch Sensor alpha value.

      Thanks! I have a black drum on hand. I'll need to order the patch sensor so the part number is greatly appreciated.

        Try cleaning it first and do the adjustment before you change parts.
        Go through the following: DISPLAY > P-LED-DA; perform
        cleaning first If P-LED-DA is 3F or more.
        1. Check installation of the Developing Assembly and the
        Drum.
        2. Clean the Patch Sensor (UN47,UN48,UN49) Window.
        3. Check if the patch sensor is disconnected.
        4. Replace the Patch Sensor.
        5. Replace the Drum.

        there's a coupler that drives the dev assembly. These have been known to cause problems in some of the earlier lot number machines. Looks like a star and is black. That has a tendency to break (pre-modded that is)

          Check black plastic prop gear on dev,coupling at rear of machine(white plastic) and make sure patch shutter opens. They break ...changed a few. If Display/P LED DA is below 3f,shutter probably broken or linkage at solenoid broken.

            How do I determine the correct value for the existing patch sensor?

            Thanks,
            Mike

              If you pull the belt out about 10-15 seconds after you power it on you should be able to see the front and rear patches on the ITB. Cut that call in half.

                After installing a new (slightly used) black drum I encountered this error during initialization: E020-0014.

                  I just realized that I hadn't posted what fixed this problem...
                  Although the patch sensor shutter seemed to be working properly my guess is that it was sticking intermittently. I say this because the shutter linkage eventually broke. After replacing the broken linkage piece, and making sure it was well lubed, the error has not returned.
                  You can't order the Shutter Linkage by itself. You must order the complete Pattern Read Shutter Drive Assembly FM3-8902-000. See FIG. 321 of the Parts Catalog.

                  Many thanks to all who helped me figure this out.
