Canon IPF8300/8400 - How to print in Service Mode

    Hi!

I have seen this discussed before but never a good response. I want to try to print a new job in service mode. The reason is I can print fine in service mode but an 2F42 error is preventing printing in normal mode. The printer wants me change the printhead. The issue is not the printhead though it is a main controller problem. So if I select a job already on the disk it prints ok. I just can't send anymore jobs to the printer. I can't seem to add a job to a mailbox either. The printer seems to compensate for the missing nozzles. Need to get a job done before getting the main controller replaced.

    Any thoughts?

I don't believe there is a WAY to print through service mode.

If you are having a 2F42 you must address that problem. I don't think that going through shortcuts will solve your problem.

Did you print a nozzle check in service mode ?

If you get a perfect nozzle check - than problem is cable or main board.

If the nozzle check has issues (like one train is missing or half train ) than troubleshooting should start by replacing the head. Or if you are an experienced tech you can measure both sided of the flex cable with testers and start measuring the mainboard.

      Hi VP

I know the problem - it is a defective main controller board. I have 2 blocks missing on each head for the nozzle check. When I move my main controller to another ipf8300 the problem moves with it. I am waiting for a new board but need to print some jobs.

      Regards

if you have an extra board - you can switch elements and fix it

I have done it a couple of times - successfully

          VP -

I do have two defective main controller boards - 1 is causing a Carriage Cover Error on bootup. The other causes the 2F42 error which is causing an entire block to be missing for each head on nozzle check. Can you suggest how I might switch elements and which elements to switch. I believe these are SMD boards - doesn't seem easy to replace components.

          Regards,

            try this...

Get a multimeter and set to resistance

You need to measure the resistor arrays which begin from RA. You need to test each of the four pair of legs.

These resistor relays are located close to the flex cable insert position on the main board.

Usually there is a 470 or a 560 written on top of them. Values should be under 100.

When you get to the one which is "gone" - mark it. Than using a heat gun or smth similar get a "good" one from the other mainboard and attach it to this mainboard.

I have not done the switch myself - i send the boards to a friend of mine who has a cellullar repair shop and he does them for me. I just tell what to switch.

            hope it helps

VP - thanks I will try that.

I assume your suggestion is for the board with the 2F42 error. Any idea what the error might be for the board with the "Close Carriage Cover" error. I checked all the fuses and they seem ok.

              Regards,

how many plotters do you have man ?

You got a long tail of issues.

                Yes your assumption is right.

About the close cover message issue - I believe you already know that the problem is not that cover itself or its sensor.

It can be a lot of things. That means you need to do a lot of measurements or if you have 2 printers of a kind it is much easier.

                  VP -

Ok finished measuring the RA arrays near the cables for the board with the 2F42 error and I found 4 RA's which each had 1 resistor out of spec. Does that sound reasonable? I did have 1 full block missing on each head. Should I worry that there is another component that is defective - i.e. capacitor or diodes etc.

                  Regards,

It can be. Usually I get one or two pieces but on the other hand I had half train missing, so it makes sense.

Remove them and replace with others from the other board.

Usually these replacements will do the job.

                      VP.

Ok I replaced the resistors and fixed the 2F42 issue with the missing 2 blocks - but now have a slightly different problem. Now I have 11 colors perfect and Both trains of Blue have the exact same error. It is partially printing and both trains have partially printed the same. I have included a photo.

I probably messed something up in the process of removal and replacement. I have rechecked all components and they look good. This looks like some sort of signal quality problem -not a complete break.

Let me know what you think...

It seems like a standard head issue. Replace the head.

If you are able to print and the printer is not throwing any errors now - don't replace it yet.

                        Soon you will - though

Well - first off it's a new head. Second - I have another bad main controller and when I put that one in - the color (Blue) shows ok - so it seems like the head works. I have problems on other colors though. More issues than this board. The other board had ink spill on it so it has a several issues.

Also if you look at the pattern of the missing jets on train A and B- both look identical.

I don't know what you have on your inventory.

Those blue lines are sign of a head issue.

Anyway it is up to you to follow my advice or ignore it
