IPF 750 random shutdowns

I'm working on a Canon IPF 750 with random shutdowns. The printer will power up just fine some days and prints 20 pages without a hitch. The next day in the middle of the 2nd page the printer just shutoff like the cord is unplugged. To power up the printer again the power plug needs to be pulled out for about 20 seconds. Most of the times the printer will boot up normally to work again, or fail again after a few pages. Sometimes the display reads Firmware Error, other times the display just keeps blank with the light on and sometimes a power up loop will keep going in a loop.

I opened the back and replaced the backup battery just to be sure but this didn't help. If i follow the wires and connectors I don't see any problems so i'm thinking A. the power supply is failing, B. the main board (memory) is failing.

Does anybody have any ideas what checks I can do?

could be a Power Supply issue, but I would lean to a Main Controller PCB issue

??? have u ever monitored your outlet voltages ?

if u keep getting a 10% drop throughout the day> could simulate this issue of loos of power/
is it on a dedicated outlet ? any thing else using this outlet line (hidden>unknown)

had many accounts that had hidden equipment using same supply line throughout same floor

Thanks for the reply. The outlet is used in combination with a Dell 2155cdn multifunctional but its mostly in sleep mode. I would like to check the power supply output but to bad I don't have the service manual to know what lines to measure. Attached is a picture off the power supply board maybe someone knows what pins to measure and what the output voltage needs to be.

Does this model have a removable AC cord? If so, the female contacts may have opened a bit causing this intermittent problem - try replacing the cord first, easy enough to do.

Well I just tried another cable. At first it looked like all was good, but to bad after 5 min the printer went down again.

I'm going to contact Canon for some kind off warranty. The last time I checked the total prints counter was at 174 pages. It has been set aside in storage for about a 1/2 year so it is almost brand new.

The other problem is the printer at startup always takes a cleaning and inkt fill :S cycle so its wasting inkt like mad.

Usually warranty is 1 year since first day installation.

You can check on the printer menu how many days since installation.

If it is under 365 - you are covered

If not - insert credit card number

If you point to the head cleaning and the warranty you get with the printhead I know there are some different rules that apply. But the problem is not in the printhead, it is the printer that resets itself so it thinks its being setup for the 1st time and cleans the head, and fills it again with inkt.

U will have to check your purchase paperwork/
As far as the underline, (Printhead Overheating Protection Control Issue)a short in a component or poor ground or voltage drops can cause your symptom--

If the head temperature sensor (DI sensor) detects a temperature higher than the abnormal temperature, the printer shuts down the print operation immediately,
If no Error on screen> Main Pcb can be the issue as stated



Did u register product online ?\
Canon does not cover any PCB's after 30 days, believe this is a Worldwide standard.
A Canon Authorized Dealer needs to file paperwork. If you have a service contract set up by sales, it would move paperwork quickly.

May be time to call for a trained service person on product.

Power supply control function

The power supply converts AC voltages ranging from 100 V to 240 V from the AC inlet to DC voltages for driving the ICs, motor, and others.
The voltage generator circuits include the +26 V generation circuit for driving motors, fans, and sensors and a +21.5 V generator circuit for driving sensors, heads, logic circuits, and others.
When the power is turned off, +26 V and +21.5 V are reduced to about 12 V and 9 V respectively (power save mode).
Power ON/OFF operation is controlled by the Main Controller PCB.

Thanks for the info. I will try to check the power supply tonight.
The printer didn't store any errors on shutdown and doesn't display any messages. Sometimes when the printer goes in a reboot loop i can heard a soft click from the power supply everytime the power gets restored, but I assume this is correct.
