[Misc] Scanning from Canon IR 1730if to Mac

I have a customer that just bought a ImageRunner 1730if. They are completely Mac based and from reading the Canon manual it seemed clear that they would be able to scan documents and save them to the Mac. However we cannot get this to work.

We worked with a service tech to get this setup but they had no experience setting it up for the Mac. I following Canon's instructions for sharing and setting up a user. I went into the terminal and started the FTP server. I've created a user for sharing and made sure they had read/write access to a folder named Scans. The Canon copier will not send the scan jobs to the Mac.

To demonstrate that scanning works the service rep showed us how he could scan and send to his PC laptop.

I need input from somebody that has gotten this to work on the Mac. We realize that work-around would be to use a PC and file share to the Mac, but that is not the way the owner of the business wants to go and bought the Canon IR understanding this could work on the Mac.

Does anyone have experience setting up Canon copiers to scan to the Mac (10.7.5 Lion)?

To Scan to a Mac you will need to:
    1. Setup the TCP/IP protocol on the copier and the Mac.
    2. Install the Canon JBIG Viewer utility for Mac.
    3. Install Internet Explorer on the Mac.
    4. Set up mailboxes and load (flash) the Remote User Interface on the copier.
The steps to scan are as follows:
    1. At the copier, scan the document(s) into a Mailbox on the imageRUNNER.
    2. At the Mac, open Internet Explorer and type in the IP address of the imageRUNNER. This will launch the RUI.
    3. Select the option to see the mailboxes and open the mailbox you scanned the original into.
    4. Double-Click on the document you want to view and this will open the document in the Canon JBIG viewer.
    5. Select File and Save. Save the scan in either JPEG, TIFF or PICT format on the Mac. Please note that different imageRUNNER models may or may not have all file formats. Whatever format you can use to save the document is going to be the format you will have to work with.
    6. Open the imaging application you would use to scan and open the file you just saved.

      Hi teckat,

Thanks for the reply however Internet Explorer and Canon JBIG Viewer are only available for Windows.

We need a solution for the Macintosh OS X. Also, based on Canon's documentation, scans should able to be saved to the Mac's hard drive as a PDF without needing additional software.

Scanning: How to scan from a Canon ImageRunner in Mavericks (OS X 10.9), Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) & Lion (Mac OS X 10.7)

In regards to scanning from a Canon ImageRunner to a Mac, this used to be done via SMB. But then Apple modernized the SMB protocol in Lion & Mountain Lion & Mavericks, and Canon decided to remain in the dark ages with their old-fashioned SMB protocol support. So therefore,

Canon ImageRunners are now incompatible with Lion (OS X 10.7) & Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) & Mavericks (OS X 10.9) for scanning via SMB. The solution is that we now have to use the FTP protocol for scanning, when scanning from a Canon ImageRunner to a Mac running Lion (OS X 10.7) or Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) or Mavericks (OS X 10.9).
To use the FTP protocol, you first need to enable it on your Mac by going into the Terminal and typing this command: sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

After enabling FTP via the Terminal, go into the Sharing system preference. Enable File Sharing in the left margin. Add the shared folder where you want the scans to end up. We usually like to create a folder on the Desktop entitled “Canon Scans”, so you can just drag this folder into the list of folders. Click on the “Options” button to make sure that AFP is enabled, but you do NOT need to enable SMB.

Now you can go into the Network system preference where you will need to manually assign a static IP address for your machine. The Canon ImageRunner will need this static IP address so that it can find your Mac. Once you’ve done all of the above, you can now create a new “one touch entry” on the Canon ImageRunner printer to scan to the shared folder on the Mac.
To do this, click on the physical button on the copier that says “Additional Functions”, then press “Address Book Settings”. Then, on the Canon ImageRunner screen, press “One Touch Buttons”. On the next screen, press an existing name to edit it, or press a numbered button to edit a new name. (You can scroll through the pages with the arrows on the right.) You must press the “Register/Edit” button to add or edit that button.

If you’re adding a new button, then on the next screen, you’ll have to press “File”. Then you’ll be taken to the next screen. The information to type in is the following: Name: Give the button a name
One-touch Button Name: Give the button a short name that will fit on a button.
        Protocol: FTP
Host Name: The static IP address that you assigned to the Mac. Do NOT use any special characters or slashes… just enter the IP address.
Folder Path: shared folder name. The trick to this is that you have to give the path from the starting point of the home folder. So if the shared folder is named “Canon Scans” and it sits on the desktop, then type in this file path: “Desktop/Canon Scans” (without the quotes).
User: the full account name of the account which owns the shared folder.
Password: the password for the account which owns the shared folder. And that’s it! You are now all set to scan from your Canon ImageRunner to your Mac!

Re: Scanning from Canon IR 1730if to Mac

Excellent! This seems like it may work. I was not using a static IP address and was also using the computer name on the copier in the settings. I won't be able to test this out until next week but hopefully it will work.

          teckat, thank you!
