    Canon iR 2870, cleaning blade.

    Canon iR 2870, cleaning blade.

Have never seen this machine before nor any other Canon recently. Remote new customer called that copies have smears. I want to start with replacing the cleaning blade which I got already from Katun (sic).

Question: Any do's and/or don'ts with this machine? Is it easy to replace the cleaning blade?

You have to take the Drum unit appart, remove drum from the unit 2 screws frontside take of the charge roller unit little tweaky there is a plastic holder at the back if i remember well. then you can acess at the drum cleaning blade change it and put all things back together.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Went there today and replaced the cleaning blade. There is still smearing and I will change now the drum + charge roller in the coming days too. The type of smearing with the rather soft "fluffy" looking edges of the markings on the print looks to me, after the replacement of the cleaning blade and based on my experience with other brands, very much as being caused by either the drum, or perhaps the charge roller.

Could not take the fuser out for inspection because I ran out of time but based on a brief look from above in the gap the roller/sleeve looked OK with some residue toner "pickles" on the metal cooling roller.

Question: Since I really have no experience with these Canons I would love to know if a defective/worn fuser could cause with this machine a similar effect as if the drum section is failing or is the effect on a print with a spoiled fuser unit very distinctive from the smudges I have now on the example print?

Could certainly be the drum, if its not under contract i would just get an oem drum, the augers in the drum unit break and you cant buy the auger separate and if it was an oem drum in the machine and the blade went chances are the drum is past its life, install a new oem drum unit and run d-gamma after you install it and check that fuser when you go out they have a terrible history with fixing films

                Thanks Luther,

how do I run d-gamma? ('told you I'm regarding Canon a noob....)

How long usually the fuser lives? Also 80K like the drum unit?

I always change the drum with the cleaning blade as a standard procedure avoiding callbacks.
A compatible drum runs 25K to 30K copies.
A genuine Fixing unit runs 200K while compatible Fixing films can run 100K.

                      Thanks guys.

So you can confirm that the cause is the drum unit and not the fuser?

I mean this is troubleshooting 101. is the image rubbing off in the area it is smearing? if so i would say the fixing film is shot, if you open the side door and look at the drum is the smear on the drum? then its the drum

Image cannot be rubbed off and is at the same time also not visible at the drum. Drum has 90K on it as well as the fuser unit.

                          Thanks and regards

Fingerprints or grease on the dev roller can cause issues like the sample you posted, remove the dev assy and rotate the dev roller cooking for clumps of toner. Clean the roller if any are found.

Just read that you could not see anything on the drum but worth a look anyway.

Replaced the drum unit and the problem went away. Thanks for the help guys.

However, when I tried to execute d-gamma as was not able to enter the service mode. I tried as written here in the panel and in the manual as follows:

                              1) Press the * key on the control panel
                              2) Press the 2 and 8 keys of the keypad at the same time
                              3) Press the * key on the control panel

but there is no initial screen following that where I could go to:

                              >copier>function>DPC>D-GAMMA>OK

Display stays as it is. What could be wrong?
