    IR2020 E0196 error?

    Hi all,

Well, we have an ImageRunner 2020 that is throwing a E0196 code? I have searched the service manual for this code with no luck finding out what it is???

The machine will run fine for 30 min to an hour then if you try to run a copy, fax or anything (as soon as you hit any key) it locks up solid! Can't do anything, if you leave it like this for a bit it will throw an E0196 error code???

I called Canon support and they said to try to do an "All Clear" in service mode and never said what the code was. I did this Friday about 10am and everything worked great before I left at noon. Ran it solid for about 2 hrs with no problem. I get a call at 4:30pm Friday saying it locked up again... and threw this code again!!

Has anyone ever ran into this issue or know what this error is?

Oh BTW... when you reboot it, it will give 3 long and 1 short beeps?? After you reboot it, as soon as you hit any key it will lock up again... if you let it sat for awhile (off) it will run fine for a bit and then do it all over again...

Also, it doesn't matter if you have the fax or network connected or not...

I'm wondering if it may be a HDD issue (over heating)

    Thanks in advance

The nearest code in the manual is a Print controller error E197.
I'll check the U.S. Canon database tomorrow....stay tuned and I'll post up an answer in the morning...but it's sounding like a Main Controller issue.
    Tried different sram?
Do you have another machine that you can test the main controller ?

Yea, I found that one too (E0197) .... as far as trying a different sram or main controller... not yet... this was my first visit with this machine and it worked great when I left Friday after doing an all clear...

Service Manager wants me to order a HDD for it but I'm not totally convinced it's the HDD.... I would REALLY like to know what the E0196 code is BEFORE I go and order something blindly.

I just found this on another website... wonder if it might have something to do with my problem???

        Firmware 1.32 Update ERROR E196-404
I just downloaded the "imagePROGRAF_Firmware_Updater_Mac_v132-134" from the OnSight FTP site. Installed the imagePROGRAF Firmware Update Tool v132 and ran the imagePROGRAF Firmware Update Tool on my iPF 5100.

The update ended with an "ERROR E196-4040 Call For Service" message. The printer will no longer come ready and always displays this message which means a firmware checksum error.

Please be aware this has happened to at least one printer, mine, and should be a concern whenever you do firmware update.

          e196 error

try to reseat all connections, then i would try to replace the ram or the dc controller.
my book says that there is a eeprom error

It'll be either sram or the main controller.
The sram is seated on the main controller so you need to trial new ram in the customer's main board but also need to have a main controller on hand.
I've seen plenty of these lockup issues and am yet to replace a HDD in a 2020 series.

              FIXED!

Well... replacing the ICU PWB fixed the problem... still not sure what the code meant but at least it's fixed...
