Are you referring to SMB scanning? The folder has to be shared with read and write permissions on it for everyone. If it's on your server you have to either use the server's Admin log in and password or create a user with the proper permissions to access the folder.

For best results, be sure to use for sharing an user name AND password. Try accessing the shared resource from other computer in the network, if it is working, the scanning should work too.

Try this in the public folder create a folder called scan and share it with full rights. when entering the path enter users/public/scan
Good luck, SMB can be a pain to set up but customers love it once it is working.

For the XP machines smb scanning (when not disable by the admin) is easy to do. With VISTA it is ****** up. You have to have a user id and password that has full rights to the folder in question and you have to save them on the copier. If it is not on domain network then the copier has to be on the same workgroup as well. If it is on a domain network the account that is being used has to be enable on the local folder properties list of each computer you are scanning to as well as the domain servers.........
