i have a customer that wants to add an su-2 scan kit to his machine. what all is involved? does software need to be updated? thanx

You only need add SU-2 module. No update of firmware is needed. I suppouse you have print controler and network card in machine. Scan options will enable after SU-2 module is istalled.

for scanning function, you need NC4, Pi3505e and SU2. You can't install SU2 only without NC4 & Pi3505e. No firmware update needed.
