Sound like there is an option set to "installed" in service mode. Boot copier into service mode and unset all option boards that are not needed.

Sorry, It sounds to me that there is an option installed on the machine such as a modem or fax kit. When you install such items on the machine you need to enable it in service mode, i think its under "state confirmation" -> "options". If in your case this option has been physically taken off the machine but not disabled in service mode then the machine may well give you the message your getting as the option is not starting when the machine is turned on.

        Hope this makes more sense

If the screen's not working, where are you reading that message?

There is a brighness wheel on the control panel, which if turned can make the screen un-readable.

You mean there is picture on the display but no lightning? if so the Backlight for the display or the backlight inverter might be faulty.

solution for the display is to first find out wether it's the inverter or the actual backlight that's broken, if it's the backlight the display has to be replaced, if it's the inverter it can ither be repaired or replaced.

as for enabling the modem unit (fax modem?): enter tech-rep mode -> system2 -> option board status -> set Fax(main) to enabled.

AFAIK there's no such thing. Your panel's backlight might be broken. Check and/or replace the LCD or the inverter board.

When you can see the screen, enter the utility mode-user settings- and adjust settings for timers.
