Tray 1 A4 won't go away! 8 1/2 by 11 or any size paper.Still A4 comes up ! Not sure what's the problem.

You want to check the Paper size sensing board behind the tray. It has four metal finger that the tray presses in. Paper size of the sub scanning direction is determined by a combination of these sensors.
Then you also have the Tray 1 CD paper size sensing board 1 & 2 which determines the main scanning direction size.
The service manuals will tell you what combinations needs to happen to tell the copier which size is in the tray. You can verify each sensor is working correctly by using state confirmation in service mode.
Also it could be that the fingers are bent in or out causing immature activation of any of these sensors. -
