We had a 36 that gave 9401s until we changed out the exp lamp (it lit, and worked fine) -

If you press down on the Plastic between the ADF slit glass and the platen glass and switch the machine on the white correction will work OK.
To get it to work every time strip open the scanner unit and lift the scanner rails on the home position side between 0.5mm and 1mm by putting tape on the ends. Cut the tape back so the scanner does not jam into it.
Its worked on 4(all) of the B36/42 i have done this on. I got the tip from an OEM engineer.
