the customer would like to scan documents to the box/hard drive of the machine and then retrieve them from network pc s. instead of using space on the server and or pc s. is this machine capable of doing this? this is not typical to how we set up the machines to folder or email. thank you

Yes, there are actually a couple ways to access the Document Box from the network.
1) Pull up the copier's Command Center and navigate to Document Box from the side navigation. You will see your Document Box structure which will allow you to download or even preview your files.
2) Use a TWAIN driver to scan files from a Document Box directly to your TWAIN software.
3) Not 100% sure about this one but it may be possible to use Kyocera Net Viewer to access the Document Box.
But I'm curious, why not just buy a NAS or throw a couple internals in a workstation? Storage space is extremely cheap. The 5551ci only offers two 160GB drives in RAID0 which offers no redundancy or fault tolerance. You can get two comparable drives for <$50. OR you can get a 1TB (or multiple for mirroring) for ~$55. Using a MFP as a file server is clunky at best and disastrous at worst when your HDD(s) inevitably fail. -

I recommend going for the NAS or Internal HDD's existing on a PC! A PC running Windows 7 OS would work perfectly using scan to SMB!
I've had HDD's on the Kyocera's crap out for no apparent reason and had to reformat the HDD!...that said, if it is a document you need access to, the push scan to the pc would be best. Not just that, if you need access to the document at home or offsite, you could make the scanned folder on the PC a "watched" folder for dropbox or some other cloud software.
