    Kyocera Mita KM-5035

It appears to be coincidental but, as soon as I replaced the toner cartridge the copies/prints started coming out with background on the reverse side of the copies. Some minor splotches could also be observed on the front but those went away with running a few service stabilization modes.

The transfer roller was caked solid with old toner and I know needs to be replaced. Could this be the only culprit?

Did it start immediately upon toner replacement, or soon after? Did you follow the entire toner replacement procedure? The aftermarket toners for these are terrible. If this is an aftermarket, and the issue is related to that, the problem would not be apparent immediately after toner replacement, but become gradually worse.

If it was immediate, check your main charge. If you use the cleaner that comes with the toner, they can sometimes leave moisture on the MC grid, which is never a good thing. Also ensure that the MC assembly is fully seated, and the wire cleaner is fully seated as well. It is best to pull the MC unit out entirely, and clean it thoroughly. At this point, it will probably be filled with toner, but whether that is the cause or simply an effect of your current problem won't be clear until you clean it out.

If you are using aftermarket toner, get some OEM for it. For the best result, you will want to vacuum everything out of the DV unit, and run U130 to start over.

The problem started soon after and I didn't follow the entire procedure. Basically just inserted the new cartridge. This is a compatible cartridge, not just toner to refill the original cartridge. The MC unit didn't seem to be dirty.

I will go back tomorrow and start from scratch with another cartridge.

I would say OEM toner is worth the money.

But, as far as your problem the only that can really effect the backside of copies are transfer roller, dirty paper path and fuser.

You can certainly clean the transfer roller with a dry cloth.

Remove the drum and dev unit. vacum any spill toner in the machine and outside the drum and dev unit. check the trays too for toner droppings. remove the transfer roller and vacum it clean of any toner and turn it to make sure there is no residue toner underneath. put everything back and run about 30 copies of a page with a few lines of text. That should give you clean copy. If still occuring post with issue.
