[Misc] KM-4230 - Noise and Copies with bad quality

    Hello there guys.

I'm not a Kyocera guy (I deal more with Konica Minoltas and Ricohs), but I'm about to go out and see a customer with a machine that, according to him, makes an abnormal noise when starting up and has copies with bad quality.

What I'd like to ask is what kind of problems am I expected to find on this specific model, and what are the most troublesome spots about it.

I don't have this machine service manual yet, but I have other model's. Is the procedure to enter service mode the same across the board?

    Thanks and cheers!

That's pretty vague, but the big quality problem with these machines was coronas. The toner cartridge has a tendency to spew toner out the back, directly into the MC unit. Cleaning the grid and corona will often do the trick, but I tended to replace the MC and transfer coronas in these fairly often.

As to the noise - Is it a squeaker or a grinder?

There was a last minute change and one of my colleagues went there instead of me. Nevertheless I'll mention this thread to him and let him chime in if the need arises.

Thank you so much for your tips. Cheers!

no problem. you get into the maintenance mode the same on almost all Kyocera's. This one is no different.

hello. I'm the guy who went to see kyocera. I could go into technical mode. the machine showed defects in repeated copies which I suspect is the drum. but the noise could not identify very well ... it's like a "sizzle" I think the wheels come from the wheels of the fusing. any ideas??

By "sizzle" do you mean a "squeaking" noise, like a wheel without proper lubrification?

The "sizzle" is more than likely an arcing corona block, probably main charge rear. Look for white residue in and around blocks and also smell them. If they smell a little burnt, they're arcing to ground. Could also be the MC Grid contacting the drum but you would see the grid pattern on the copies. Emergency fix for arcing coronas is to insulate with electrical tape between block and metal channel. Could also be the MC/DEV power pack itself but I would look there last.
