That's what I thought, but since it didnt work I was just checking... tech support said that it had to be from Kyocera, although several other sources had told me they had replaced off the shelf with no issues...

We have a 500ci that has the C0640 error, replaced hard drive with no change. Tested hard drives in another machine (could only test one at a time but both tested ok). Sent the main pwb to Hytec repair to be checked since it was originally from them, no fault found there either... Ran U024, immediately goes to ON/OFF screen, Ran U989, immediately goes to ON/OFF screen, Ran U906 and hangs up on the execute, never gets to ON/OFF command screen... ordering a new set of dual drives from Hytec, they are going to format and test prior to sending so hopefully will resolve the issue... any other suggestions????

just out of interest have you reseated the dimms and memory sticks and does the machine have a fax unit installed.

            WD1600AAJS or similar will work.
Any drive with the same/similar specs should work
            WD1600AAJS
            Serial ATA 300
            7200.00 RPM
I have not tried any larger than 160GB yet, but the WD1600AAJS is still available on the internet.

Thanks for all the suggestions, had tried some of them, didnt work... anyway, ordered two new drives from Hytec, they formated and tested them prior to sending and once installed this morning, problem resolved.
