Is there a way to print "auto color" on TA 500ci?

It's nice that there is an AUTO COLOR copy button, but I just ran into a customer today who prints a 2 sided 11 x 17 bulletin.
Outer page is color, inner is B&W. They were wondering why there bill was so large for color, come to find out that they print this job duplex in full color (they think inner page is a B&W click, but it has been color click even though there is no color)

I have checked the KX and XPS drivers but cannot find auto color on the print side.

    Any ideas?

Kyocera claims that setting the print driver to color will in effect be auto color. I haven't tried to test this yet.

The problem can be that while a page on a computer appears to be black and white, there may be color information there. If even one pixel of the document has color data, the page is a color page. I'm not that familiar with desktop publishing software, but I know that some graphics may be set to black but have the option to be set to other colors. While it looks black, it's really full density cyan, yellow and magenta.

I'm not sure if I'm making this any clearer or just muddying the water.

I agree with Darry, any color info will become a composite image. We had a customer that we had to prove this to by magnifying the image. I also had a customer that loaded 3 versions of the driver (PCL, PS and KX) because they behaved differently for this very issue depending on what publishing program he was using. A little trial with different drivers might help your customer out, or you could point out how rich the composite black looks and take the click money. Your call.

You may want to look at there prints to see if the black is black or process black on the print outs. I use a magnifier that has a light, if process black I can see CMY.

Hmm, well I will do some tests and see what happens. I like color clicks, but want to try and see if I can make it work out for them and learn in the process. And it's a low budget church so want to try to help their costs.
Will reply with what I find, waiting on some rollers before I go back.

OK. So I tested an 11 x 17 church bulletin. color outside and b&W inside.

Printed using color and get 4 color clicks. There is no color on the inner pages. Doesn't seem like auto-color.
I'm going to call Kyocera tomorrow to see what they say.

Re: Is there a way to print "auto color" on TA 500ci?

              I set up a 5550Ci this morning.

I created a Doc Box and scanned two originals in. Both were Black&White but I scanned one as B&W, the other as Color.

Then I joined the two docs into a third doc. The third doc had 1 B&W page and 1 color page.

              ***Both pages appear B&W.****

I downloaded all three docs onto the shop PC and printed them with the Version 6 driver.

The page scanned as B&W added 1 count to the B&W count.
The page scanned as Color added 1 count to the Color count.
The doc with both pages joined added 1 count to Color and 1 count to B&W.

conclusion: Auto Color works in the driver......

The key is determining if your page is really B&W or just appears to be B&W.

Also watch if you are using one of the color profiles, you could have a problem between the b&w and color clicks

This is a color techie question.
Always becareful on the application & setting that you are using.
If the application base is using RGB platform, high chances it will use CMY or CMY+K which will be charge under color click charge.
For example Adobe CS, you can define C=0, M=0, Y=0 & K=100 then it will be charge 100% B&W click charge
