HELP! CS 250ci Won't recognize toner?

The machine keeps saying to add black toner but the toner cartridge is full and I've tried another one too. I checked the toner supply path and it's clear and the developer seems fine. I cheated the door and watched the toner gears and they're spinning as they should.

I saw the bulletin about motors failing but I don't think it's the toner container motor but I'm not sure. It looks like that motor drives the color toner containers and the black has it's own separate smaller motor? I can't tell and I don't know how to get to that motor to check it, since I can't find instructions in service manual on how to tear the machine down that far.

I think it may be the toner density sensor in the black developer. Anybody have suggestions? Thanks
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Take the back cover off, turn on the machine, all the motors should spin

Your dev unit needs to be replaced.

to check the K dev.motor, open the back cover.run the SIM 30... touch the dev K motor ,if u feel its running slowly, then just tighten your grip on the motor for 5 seconds ...if it is stop rotating ,then replace the dev motor with the new modified one.if its running fine.... change the dev.unit K.

They do. I didn't think it was a motor problem but I didn't think to check them at the time to be sure.

          Yep, that was it.

I tried to test the motors and it wouldn't let me. Tried opening the doors and it still didn't let me. I'm not sure why. Once I had the new developer in, I was able to test the motors and they seemed fine.

          Thanks for the replies everyone!

Yep. Have had this problem many times both with Black and color developer units. If you look at U155 > Toner sensor. This won't initialize anything, it will just turn your developer units and give you an output for each toner sensor. Generally speaking, your outputs should be within 100 or so of the target value. If I had to guess, I would say your BK value is sky high which means it's adding the toner just fine, and it can read the toner levels in the developer, but it's not recognizing that change so it just continues to add toner until it gives a machine error, or an add toner message.

I tried to run U155 but it wouldn't let me, I'm not sure why. Changing the dev unit did fix the issue. I'm thinking the toner sensor in the dev unit had gone bad.

make sure the previous empty toner is like 5-10 feet from the machine, I had this problem once and was told the toners had some radio frequency nonsense, and the empty one had to be far enough away from the machine. It fixed my problem though.

I think the toner cartridges have a RFID on board so if you swap cartridges between machines it may not work because it has the first machine's imprint.

I have heard this before. Apparantly true.

I have heard this too about the toners being to close. The rfid board and the chip in the toners confuse each other when they are all to close together.

I was actually a bit embarrassed to give this answer because it just sounds so ridicules.

I was told I was crazy when I tried to get a tech to check that and move the toners.... but it worked
We also have replaced a continous drive assembly in 4 machines and that seems to be solving the problem of asking for several toners at one time and the toners were all full.
The part number is 302H793461. We are getting ready to try it on a machine that is saying it needs all 4 color toners. The tech has replaced the rfid board, developer, updated firmware and still having issues. The toner is nowhere near the machine. Hopefully this drive assembly fixes it.
