Need help with selecting the right copier machine

    Hi Folks,

Need some help selecting the right machine for the job.

I manufacture index tabs, and want to buy a digital copier machine to print on 90 lb. - 125 lb. white/manila index paper. Paper size is mostly 11" X 9". I usually print on the last 1/2" of the 9" side. Also I print 9 to 12 point Bold Helvetica font. Right now we use a riso printer in house and farm out printing on ones with color or body copy with logos etc.

I like the tab printing to be crisp and clean, so the Riso is not always up to the challenge.

I have clients that send us customer stock that is already printed and the print quality is amazing. One of the smaller machines that I've seen in person, is a Docucolor 252. My plan is to buy a used machine and have a local repair guy do any repairs.

    My questions are:

    1. is a Docucolor 252 overkill for printing tab titles mostly?

    2. If I don't use the color for a month or 2, is this bad for the machine?

    3. Is their another very common machine that will print the 11" X 9" paper, I can find on Ebay?

    4. Is there any way to control the heat? Some of the tabs are curled bad from the fuser heat?

    5. Finally is there a big difference in print quality on coated smooth stocks compared to more coarse stock like index paper? It seems all the customer stock supplied tabs are printed on some kind of CS paper etc.?

Thanks for reading this long post and any suggestions you can help with. I've been researching this for a month or so and I'm more confused now than when I started. I tried to buy 2 different DC 252 on craigslist that sold right before I could buy them.

Seriously you joined CTN in 2013 ??????
First impression it sounds like your mid year university thesis/assignment is due for your college doctorate, and you would like someone to write it for you.

If you went to university you would have had "compare and contrast assignments" where you research a range of different items and then write a report on the good and bad points of all items.

If you had done your prior research proper you would have surf the internet chose a range of MFD copier/printer machines that will best suite your requirements.
Armed with your new copier/printer knowledge, you would then list those machines here on CTN an all the guys will advise you which machine may best suite your requirements.

Do a bit of net surfing, get a list of machines from various manufactures and then seek the CTN experts to point you in the right direction.

Wow, did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Why even waste your time replying? I actually was looking forward to replying with a "Thank You", but I'll pass this time.

Yeah, I joined in 2013. Did you even take the time to research my first 3 posts before assuming anything?

Hopefully someone that runs or has run a Docucolor 252 or a different machine at work can point me in the right direction for printing index paper with good results. I can research online until I'm blue in the face, and waste a lot of time. I would rather ask people small business owners or pressman with real world experience what I should be looking at.

        1. Depends on your volume.
        2. Yes - well no, it's not technically "bad for the machine" but like a car, highway miles are always best.
        3. Copier on eBay = Shitty copier.
        4. It's not just the temp, it's heat, pressure, time and the stock you're using (mostly the stock), but changing the heat won't fix it.
        5. Yes

That's not a very good way to encourage the people with knowledge of the equipment you are looking for to help you during their free time.
          Still, good luck.

            Hi Ctl-Alt-Del,,

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

If you were going to spend around five grand on a used Docucolor 252, what would be the most clicks you would be willing to accept?

            Thanks!

I'm not a Xerox tech so I'm not the guy for that specific question but others can help if you give us your:

              1. Average monthly volume (total of all output, we don't care about scans)?
              2. Color average monthly volume?
              3. How many of these magical tabs do you run a month?
              4. Other than that, do you run any special jobs/stocks?
              5. Do you need finishing, staple, sort, punch?
              6. What is your general geographic location?

                1. Average monthly volume (total of all output, we don't care about scans)? Zero, only manufacture stock and custom index tabs
                2. Color average monthly volume? Zero. I could print my own marketing flyer/mail pieces. Also I could make colored custom tabs in house.
                3. How many of these magical tabs do you run a month? 10-50,000 custom tabs a month, could do more depending on ease and quickness of machine(most tabs we run on on Riso EZ590)
                4. Other than that, do you run any special jobs/stocks? NO
                5. Do you need finishing, staple, sort, punch? No
                6. What is your general geographic location? Southern CA

Thanks Ctl-Alt-Del! Also thank you in advance to anyone who can take the time to reply and offer some good advice.

Re: Need help with selecting the right copier machine

Good evening to all. I think that your choice is pretty solid on the Xerox DocuColor 252, I can point you in the right direction and say the Xerox DocuColor 550/560 or even newer is the C60/C70. If you are looking at Production Quality print I can point you away from the 7845/7855, let me explain. The DocuColor series is designed for offset digital printing to offer a lot more benefits to what you are looking for. I have seen both model lines in action and would highly recommend the DocuColor series. For the costs that you are farming out work and easily pay the costs. I have a client that does on average of 53k printing per month on a Xerox DocuColor 252 and some that do >10k with no complaints. As far as not using the machine for a month or so, no worries just turn it off and store or you can leave it on, as it will go into Power Save mode. When looking at Ebay for them, buyer beware. Many places that take them in on trade and try to resale them do not have the proper equipment to maintain them or refurb, reman, try to sell as new and end up buying used parts to band aid a problem. Call around to a few shops and see who works on these machines, most companies that work on these will only work on Xerox.

PM me and I will send you the company we use for used equipment.

                        Hope this helps
