Okidata ML395 flashing alarm light after replacing ribbon

I have a strange one here.... this ML395 was working fine. Customer replaced it with an OEM, and now the carrier will slowly go to the left and then the alarm light flashes. Turn on without ribbon and printer comes to ready. You can print without the ribbon. I checked the ribbon... it turns freely and the ribbon drive is working. Carrier rail is clean and carrier moves easily. When turning on the printer without the ribbon, I put slight pressure on the ribbon drive gear and the problem reappeared. They have another 395 (not working... I don't know the problems with it) so I replaced the carrier motor (I figured the chances of both machines having the exact same problem are pretty small) but the problem is still there. This time, when turning on the printer with the ribbon installed, when the carrier goes to the left the ribbon goes slack, although the ribbon drive is turning. It's as if the drive is not turning fast enough. This is happening with TWO new OEM ribbons! Unfortunately the customer discarded the original ribbon so I cannot try it again. Everything seems to move as it should, nothing is binding that I can tell. Has anyone had this problem? I'm missing something but I don't know what. Thank you.
Working...
