Brother MFC 9840 black image repets itself

When a page is printing using black the image is repeated a couple of times on page (ghosting). The customer installed a new drum unit which has new drum for each color but problem still occurs. The customer then printed a form which was all black but added the letter "r" in red. The document printed out perfectly though only one letter was in color and everything else was in black. Also if you copy that document and press color button you will get a perfect copy with no ghosting.
I had posted this problem Friday but thought I may not have explained it properly so I am doing it again. Any help is appreciated. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

Nobody had the answer to this. My first guess would have been drum unit except that customer had already installed a new one with no satisfaction. You might think the fuser unit or transfer belt could cause the ghosting except why would it only happen on black and not colors.
It turned out to be the black toner cartridge. Although it was an OEM cartridge it was causing the ghost images and when a new one was installed the prints were perfect. This may be helpful to anyone with a similar problem on any make machine as the fundamentals would remain the same.
I had a similar problem on a Ricoh Aficio CL7300 where drum unit was changed and double imaging persisted. Now I know it was the toner and will call customer to let him know as he was going to use another machine. Hope this helps someone else someday. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

It did Frank - 3 years later after your original posting - thanks for posting!

I had the exact same problem (ghosting only occurred when printing a page with all black text - if another color appeared on the page, even one letter in a different color - then there would be no ghosting).

After spending much time searching the net and finding suggestions such as replacing drum, fuser, etc., I saw your note/solution and replaced the black toner cartridge with one I had laying around and it worked!

Thanks again. And I am sure (or at least hoping) others see your solution before they go nuts!
