NEC 28C6 - problem with IP scanner

    Hi,

I was trying to set up IP scanner on a customer's laptop which is running Windows Vista. When IP scanner didn't behave nicely after installation I tried turning off the firewall, made sure there's exceptions for IP scanner and image receiver, and the documents still don't transfer.

I can ping, print, and the temporary one touch registrations are communicated to the machine, but once a document is scanned it just sits in "To be sent" status. I've tried scanning with both IP scanner and a one touch registration which lead to the same results. Scanning via SMTP isn't an option since the machine resides on a part of the network without an internet connection.

Any suggestions? So far the possibilities I've thought of are telling the customer to upgrade from Vista, or swapping the scan board on the 28C6 with the equivalent Konica Minolta board since KM machines use FTP. I've done the 2nd option with DI3510f->3520 with good results

Set it up to scan to SMB - much easier. I'm not sure if IP scanner utility works with that model anyway. FYI, the Konica Minolta is identical, so swapping boards won't help.
    1. Create a shared network folder on the Vista machine - you might have to set up Windows network sharing first, if it's not already. You should be able to see the folder from another PC on the network.
    2. Create an SMB destination with the Vista machine's IP (or better yet, Host name)
    3. Use the folder's network share name
    4. Use the Vista Machine's users login and password
If you use the IP on a DHCP network, it may change at sometime and lose the scan ability. Likewise, if the user changes their password.
    Hope this helps.

SMB or even FTP would be great, but for this type of bw machine NEC actually puts in a different scan option board. Only supports smtp and their ip scanner utility.

Anyway, I solved the problem for him by grabbing a $20 router, slapped dd-wrt on it, and everything works. For some bizarre reason the switch he had couldn't understand local traffic. The router was probably overkill, but it got his office properly networked.

Ok, you mean the IT2840D. The IT28C6 is color.
Yeah, the 2840 does not have SMB. The IP scannner works on Win 7, so I'd assume it would for Vista. I can't think of any client that's using Vista, though.

Now I feel silly, you're right, I meant 2840,I should get better at proofreading my posts. But yeah, I got it to work, the office just had a general networking problem and the machine wasn't able to send traffic out.
