    DP 23XX, 30XX guidance needed.

Thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone with alot of experiance can help me. I have been servicing the Panas for less than a year now. Never been formally trained on Panas. Just learned what I could with the help of the gracious people on this forum, service manuals, and knowledge gained by servicing other brands for 30 yrs. Now to the important stuff:

I am aware of parts replacement and programs that need to be ran for those parts. Particularity, the drum and developer. F8-14 and F8-09. Also I have been told by many who know more than I to turn Quantum off on this series of machines. More than likely beacause it did not work.

Now here is where it gets good. First, if Quantum is off, it is my understanding that the only sensor used to maintain toner level in the developer in the TD sensor mounted on the dev unit. Let me know if I am wrong or right.

I have a these machines in the field and shop. After putting fresh dev in them and running F8-09 all seems well. Then after a while, week or month, I end up with undertoned or overtoned. I know you can adjust F6-21 to compensate. More (-) for less toner and more (+) for more toner. Looking inside tray 1 at the sticker, I have seen F6-21 listed (printed from factory, not hand written) from (-26 to -86). This is throwing me for a loop. Why such a large variance?

I am asking for any and all input that will help me better understand the toning process and any other input you may have on any other Panas as well. I believe that if I can get Panas in general to tone successfully, I can be successful in keeping my customers happy.

Are you using third party toner? We use it and it tears the living hell out of the bias transfer rollers. Genuine toner will have a green cap, the ones we use are blue.

As to Quantum, I only turn it off on 35xx, 45xx, and 60xx. Quantum basically adds a temperature and a humidity reading to the mix. What you stated is correct, the TD sensor runs the show. A dusty LVPS can cause density issues; seen it a few times. Also check the 2 sensors under the transfer roller for dust. As to the drawer readings, I have seen the -86 also and have no idea why the range is so wide.

Failing to plan is planning to fail!!!

As always, thank you for helping me. I must say I misread one of your responses from back in November. You posted that you only turn off Quantum on 35XX, 45XX, and 60XX. Well, I went out and turned it off for the 23XX and 30XX. Oh no. Should I turn them back on? Will it cause any problems? I am in Georgia. I wonder if this may be causing my problem?

We are using the blue cap third party toner. Have'nt seen a problem with the transfer rollers, just not toning well.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Looking at page 239 in the svc manual for 23XX and 30XX, this is my understanding. The TD sensor determines the amount of toner added to the developer unit. The sensors, located below the transfer roller are used for changing the laser output due to temp. and humidity.

Thanks again Mojo. I don't think I would be where I am today on these Panas if it were not for the appreciated help you have given me.

Just my two cents, but I've never turned off the Quantum on any of the Panasonics I service and I never have any issues with overtoning or undertoning (at least not on the 23xx/30xx series). I would turn quantum back on on your machines and see what happens.
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Also, I've never had to adjust F6-21 after the developer calibration on anything other than a few 15/1820s. Than again, maybe I'm just really lucky.
