    Scanning

Got a call for cannot scan. Upon arrival I found some users can scan and some cannot. There are only about 7-10 that need to scan.

When the machine was installed, they were set up with the communication utility. All was well for a while. Then they called for cannot scan. It appeared that the communication utility was dropping from the start up folder. By going into the Panasonic folder and clicking on Communication utility the utility would start and scanning worked. So, someone went out and set them up to scan using the PCs IP address. Then set the PCs to static IP. This worked for a while and now were back to having issues. The PCs are still set to static. By the way there are 2 names/buttons on the lcd when you select scan on the copier. One from the initial setup and one for the IP. Example would be "John" and "John IP". Not sure if this is a good idea. What do you think?

This is what I was told to do for scanning on Panasonics. Install the communications utility on each PC and poof, your scanning. Oh, and set the name you want to show up on the LCD and set interval to 60 instead of 30 minutes.

Need a little help on this one.

    Re: Scanning

If the users do not need private folders and do not care others seeing their scans then in instances of multiple users needing to scan, I always install the communications utility onto one computer and have the scans go to a shared folder on the network. The fewer computers you have hooked up to scan the better.

      Re: Scanning

Sounds like the network or something on the network is partially or completely blocking the Port 6509 that the communication utility uses to communicate on the network.

when the Panasonic communications Utility broadcasts the pc's name on the network to the machines, it uses the UDP side of the port. when you scan from the machine it uses the TCP side of the port. So if the name of the computer does not appear at the machine, eventhought the PCU is running and set up properly, then something is blocking that side, if you can use static IP's and manually input the PC destination into the machine then the UDP side of the port is all that is blocked. if only the TCP side is blocked the pc name will appear but scans never reach the PC

What can block the port? Firewalls, antivirus/anti-spyware programs, managed switches hubs or routers. Both sides of port 6509 need to be completely open for the PCU to work properly, but with todays increased security concerns, the PCU often looks like some kind of spyware program, so it gets blocked.

        Re: Scanning

I believe you are tight on. Did not know about the 2 protocols. Thank you for that. I learned something. I believe they are getting blocked. By clicking on the utility or the firewall tool, I can get them scanning again. I have started showing the customer how to do this and all seems ok for now. Thanks for your input.

          scanning panasonics

Make sure that the comunications utilities is running at start up in the computers that aren't scanning. It make sure also that the printer's ip is set to static also. Are they using the document manager to scan? Are they choosing the rigth scanner in the document manager. Let me know how you do, good luck.

All is well. All I did was make sure the utility was in start up. For some reason they just drop out of start up. Also used firewall tool and have not heard from them since. I think between microsoft and antivirus updates, the port gets blocked.
