    Ricoh 6054 or 6002? - your opinion

Hi. I'm looking for some thoughts & opinions based on experience.

Our small office is about to renew a 4 year contract with Ricoh for a copier/printer/scanner/fax & I would like to become more knowledgeable about our options & the opinions/thoughts of those more savvy about these machines.

We are a small (5 people) law firm, busy, 9k-12k images (fax, copy, or print) per month - the photocopier (currently a Ricoh Aficio MP 6001) is the technological heart of the office.

We are very happy with our Ricoh serviceman & the service side of things (i.e. we would like to stay with him).

We need reliability & quick "fix it" time. Monthly amount paid is important, too, but less so than the reliability & quick repair.

Currently Ricoh sales is proposing an MP6054SP to us. Our service man (we have a more regular working relationship with him than the salesman....) prefers the 6002.

What are other people's thoughts/opinions & experiences with comparing & contrasting the MP6054 vs. the Aficio MP6002? Any suggestions.

    Much obliged. Thank you.

The MP 6054 is Ricoh's latest model in this speed range. The preventive maintenance cycle is 120K. Drum life is 120K. Toner yield is 24K. Target monthly volume is 20K.

The preventive maintenance cycle on the MP 6002 is 300K for most of the machine and 450K for the fusing unit. Drum life is 1.2M. Toner yield is 172K. Target monthly volume is 25K.

Unless you need a number of the new features on the 6054, I would recommend the 6002.

      Thanks so much! Much appreciated.

Yes, we prefer fewer bells & whistles than more - we hardly use all of the features on the 6001 already.

Should I wonder why they are "pushing" the 6054....? Ultimately I suppose it doesn't matter, I need to stay focused on what's best for the office.

Newer technology. Standardization across models, even thought the 25,30 and 35 use a different toner than the 40, 50 and 60. Available of advanced options including the Droid based Smart Operation Panel.

Yes, our office "test drove" a 6054 for a week. All of us techs got to take it apart to see if we would recommend it to the individual schools that actually buy them. We thought it reminded us of another copier from the past - the 1035/1045. We could not recommend it, we MUCH prefer the 6002. Good Luck to you!

Sounds like you value the input and service of your tech. Which is nice, not many clients show their tech's much if any support let alone respect. If you leave the choice up to your tech, I'd suggest going with what he recommends. Every tech has their own area of expertise and their own favorite machines and models. With you stressing the importance of quick repair time, to me it sounds like the sure bet would be going with what he, the tech prefers. This will allow him to be familiar with the unit from the start and be able to service it to your quick time expectations.

the xx54 series is pretty new and there's not a long track record on the model. How ever the 6001/02 series is a time tested engine that has been around and evolved over time. It's a trusted work horse!!! although your volume is quite low for that machine and by the spec's your volume probably points a sales person to the xx54 series. I'd recommend the 6002 anyway, I'll place them every chance I can, pushem hard and their happy machines!!!!!!!!!!

I'll put my hand up for the Mp 6002 as well. It comes from a long line of solid performers where as the MP 6054 has the genes from the Aficio 450, AF 1045 and AF 2045 in its DNA, and those machines were well known turkeys!

Count me in for the 6002, too.

Your tech's comfort level may be an intangible, but it goes a really long way in maintaining a well running machine and a happy relationship.

And kudos on your attitude and approach in making the decision.Too many are made based solely on price.

another for the 01/02 series. they are great copiers. I have about 40 of them in my territory. 300kpm kit, developer, fuser rollers, tray1 rollers is the main thing to do and you can go about 450 on 300k kit and developer. fuser usually around 600k. excellent box

WOW talk about apples and oranges. Speaking as a (former) Ricoh tech, the "xxx4" series of (black and white Metis engines) are quite nice and efficient for what can be expected of them. I set up a couple before I left. If that is the future of the Ricoh brand in that segment, I would be concerned of the longevity of it. They (as well as the Metis color) are "light duty" as far as build quality. They work great as long as there is NO physical stress or damage to any of it's components. Once the damage is done, there is NO way to completely repair it unless you replace entire assembly's.

The 6002 is an awesome box that truly is a workhorse. Of course, it has it's own set of issues namely excessive fusing codes (if you have had the 6001 long enough, you know the drill) and it seems there are a few that blow toner everywhere within a few thousand clicks. Your tech is right to recommend the 6002 as they would be MUCH better suited to take care of it for the term of the new lease

                      Good luck

Hello all - Oh my gosh, do I appreciate these responses! THANK YOU SO MUCH. Going to read & re-read them slowly to take it all in, but it's soooo great to have this kind of advice/support.

Yes, precisely - this post is very helpful from the "psychology" side of a new purchase - you showed me what we really value - sure, the machine is great, it is our "workhorse" as others have said, but what we really value is when things go wrong.... & that is where our our tech comes in. He's completely right there for us. I would like to keep him happy more so than the salesman who does not & will not have a regular relationship with us.

Also a 6002 fan here. We have about 60 throughout schools and local government, their volume is much higher than yours, and properly maintained and operated, they are the better option. And kudos to you for your approach to a new machine! Wish more customers were as thoughtful.
