    MPC5502 displaying sc672-00

There was a surge in customer's premises that affected most of their equipments including the Ricoh MPC5502.
I have checked the PSU which seems to be fine. I have powered it on with HDD disconnected, but the code remain. I have also powered it on while holding the reset key, still no solution. Any input in resolving this problem will be highly appreciated.

    Goose's Guide says:

Controller start up error - try w/o HDD and fax
    Controller start up error - replace controller (D143 #D1435710, D144 #D1445710)
Controller start up error - check reseat controller to BICU connection

SC672 errors are usually bad news and aren't always easy to diagnose because the code can be caused by many things. The controller fails to start which can be for any number of reasons and I've seen psu's, bicu's hdd's, ram chips, corrupt nvrams (and some engineer caused too ). The manual refers to a loss of communications with the display but in every case I've seen where the screen lights up this has proved to be a complete waste of time.

If the machine has had an electrical 'event' any of the above or a combination could be damaged.

First off, disconnect all peripherals, open the front door and switch it on. If the error code shows up you're probably looking at either the bicu or controller (assuming you have a stable +5V DC supply to both). The controller fault might only be one of the ram chips which has been zapped so try removing each and power on (door open). Look for a change in error or for the machine to boot - they'll often get through a basic start with a single working chip.

If not you're probably looking at bicu or controller. Do you have another machine you can use for testing boards? If so, I'd lift the bicu from the faulty machine and try it in a working machine, then the controller (keep track of the nvrams!).

      Good luck!

I have tried removing the ram yet the error remained. I am actually looking at two things. 1 BCU + EPROM 2 Controller Board + RAM. But I'm afraid to place order since I'm not very sure which should be the problem. Pls if you have had similar experience, pls advice.

I've dealt with a fair few lighting strike service calls over the years.
Those power spikes normally take out either the controller or the fax PCB.
With the point of entry being the ethernet or fax cable.
The mains power is normally pretty well earthed, so don't see many PSU's go bang due to power surges.

Thanks Cipher. I will therefore place order for the Controller Board. But is there need to replace the NVRAM also?

Sometimes the data on the NVRAM can get corrupted, but a NVRAM chip actually going bad is a pretty rare fault generally.

I would start with the controller, and go from there.

Do you mean that a corrupted NVRAM can't damage the Controller Board if installed on it?
