Not really sure of the error you have.
Has the Machine reported any other Info either Display message or SC Code ?

The E49 code can be cleared by doing the following:
1. press the "clear modes" key
2. press the number "1,4,3" keys
3. press the "clear/stop" key 3 times
4. reboot
5. enable firmware updating by changing SP5886 (this can be changed from Web Image monitor but I don't remember where)
6. try updating firmware again

Executing SP5801-3 will work also but will reset alittle more than you probably need.

Looks like the customer has disabled firmware update using Web Image Monitor. Next time you visit this machine, log in using WIM and see if the function has been disabled again. If it has, give the customer a swift kick in the nuts (or foof if it's a bird) and ask them politely not to do it again.
