    MP171 not updating System Copy

    Hello there!

I have a MP171 that had some issues printing, sometimes it would print and some times not.
I updated the firmware and was capable to update everything except System/Copy. It didn't show on the display.
I tried to update through WIM and I see this message:
Error occurred on the last firmware update.
Error Code : 52 Invalid firmware file.
    Specify a correct firmware file.
No matter what version of System/Copy I put on the SD card it always shows "No valid data. E50"
If I try to update through WIM, it always shows v1.02 after the update and thr message that an error occurred on the last firmware update.

At one point I got "Address Book Data Error" and did the rescue procedure, but I still can't update the System/Copy firmware.
The present versions of firmware are:
    MP171_FW.jpg

    Any ideas?

I've done that. I downloaded all versions available (1.00.1 to 1.07). It doesn't recognize any of them.
I've changed the NVRAM and the message in WIM as disappeared. I'm updating to 1.03 through WIM and if it succeeds I'll update to 1.07 with the SD card.

The NVRAM didn't solve it. The System/Copy it still is at v1.02 and the Error message about the firmware update reappeared.
It's probably the controller board. Right now I don't have one to try.

Check that SD card is not write protected

Try new SD card and format and write to it on a different computer than you have been using.

Kind of a dumb question, but when all else fails start checking what should be obvious: you're using the GW firmware file as opposed to the old .bin files that the base models take, correct?

Correct. It doesn't matter if I use the SD card or WIM to try to update the machine.
We have +200 MP171SPF/MP201SPF on the field. This one was bought second hand. I don't know what's been done in the past and probably someone did a bad firmware update that I can't get rid of. I think my boss is trying to get a Controller to test on this one.
I think that there is one thing that hasn't been done yet. Reflash each firmware one by one instead of only trying to update System/Copy.

Maybe friday I'll give you guys some news.

                  Thanks

Re: MP171 not updating System Copy

When you suffer from continuous address book problem in the MP171 it is too late and you have to update system and use special rescue SD service card.

Problem background is that there was bug in the system below v1.03. Some stupid engineer kept address book in the NOR flash memory together with firmware.
Like we know NOR flash is written by large blocks of data and takes time. There is serious risk to get data corruption. Firmware does not have any mechanism to recover corrupted memory content.
So, if anyone see first symphtom of problem with address book one have to update system above v1.03 as soon as possible. Frequency of problem increases in time and on some beautiful day it will be not possible to use address book at all.
For that case Ricoh has released special recovery SD card. Before total problem it is enough just update above v1.03.

We know problem well because we had to proof Ricoh that they have general bug. They did not believe us and our reports from field a few years ago and we had a hundred damaged machines in the same time in the same customer. Se we made warranty claims (on their cost of course) by the entire year . They gave us a hundred new controller boards before they had believed and released new system firmware and rescue SD.
We suspect that by system firmware update they have moved address book from NOR flash memory into existing in the slot SD card.
Rescue SD card is available only for official Ricoh service network as special service tool.

Thats is all in that issue.

Thanks for ths describtion - never got to know what caused the adress book data error until now^^

Fortunately we never had upgrade issues.

                        I'm gonna throw out a possibility...you said this was a second hand machine....is it a 171 or possibly a 161 with a 171 front door on it. ( I've seen it )

Look at the silver label with serial number. Tell me what is machine code (eg. D019 or something like that)
