If by portrait you mean LEF and the paper size does not auto select properly (i.e. you had to set it in User Tools), the paper width sensor for that paper tray is either broken, knocked out of its mount, the mount is bent or the extension on the back of the side fence is broken. The sensor is used for two things, is the paper width in auto size and the lift pressure applied to the paper. If it thinks it is narrower than A4 SEF, the lift pressure will not be enough for the paper to feed. I just had this last week on a machine that thought 8.5X11 LEF was 8.5X5.5 SEF.

      Agreed.

So apparently you're just going to ignore the advice and not even bother checking the sensors?

My bet is that this didn't happen all at once. It's just that you became aware of it once the tray started jamming on Portrait, and then you tried setting the other trays the same with the same result.
The sensors becoming dislodged is a VERY COMMON problem, and in my opinion, the only explanation for your problem. Check them all.

In all likelihood, the bypass is jamming because it's not "smart", and you're not setting the correct paper size/orientation setting when you use it for copying.

Where does the paper get jammed?
            At the registration roller?
It could be a rego clutch or a broken registration bushing where the tension spring attaches to the bushing.
BOTH of these scenarios are really common for this model machine...as is the paper sensor.
