What model ADF have you fitted?
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

If this machine has has an ARDF fitted it needs the SPDF engine firmware installing.

Did it have an ARDF before fitting the SPDF

Which IPU did you order and put in? If the mainframe originally had an ARDF, then it likely came with the IPU made for that doc feeder. If you replaced it with the same part number and are trying the SPDF with it, you'll get nowhere. The SPDF requires IPU D1505656 in order to connect properly, as far as I can tell.

If you used the correct IPU, then go with what TonerMunkeh suggested.

If the mainframe had an ARDF originally, it probably has the DF3090 firmware (D7795300) on it. Before it can be used with the SPDF, you need the DF3080 firmware (D6835550).

The DF firmware is not loaded to the main frame. it is loaded to the DF. If you are somehow able to load the wrong DF firmware, the only solution is to replace the DF PCB.

According to the parts catalog, the D1505656 is for the MP C6003, or at least in the states. Also, in the states the SPDF usually comes default on the on the 45, 55 and 60. Looking at the installation instructions in the service manual, the main difference between the main frame for an ARDF and the SPDF are the addition of the sub ipu that the CIS connects to and the BCU. There also SP settings that need to be done. I will leave it to you to look those up. If the SPDF came off another machine, copy those SP settings from that machine and use the BCU from that machine.

Yeah, you're right. The firmware is resident in the doc feeder. It's been so long since I've turned a screwdriver on a box with a DF, it slipped my mind.

However, the parts catalog shows the D1505656 being for the D148/D149/D150, which would include the MPC5503. I also just noticed that the BCU is specific for a D149 with the SPDF (there's also a BCU for the D149 with the ARDF). Good call on swapping the BCU from the known working box. It'll be interesting to see what he finds.

If you order the SPDF option to update a machie that has the ARDF or no DF, it coes with the BCU.

True, but the OP only said that they tried installing a DF that worked fine on another machine, so it wasn't really clear that the problem machine had the correct BCU, only that he had changed the IPU.

I still think that they should swap both the known working machine's IPU and BCU to the one that throws the code. That should tell for certain if the boards are the problem or not. Having multiple machines makes things far easier to troubleshoot. :-)

Thanks all for the feed backs, well this machine is out of the box (brand new).
I managed to get a replacement machine under ricoh warranty terms.
The new replacement machine works perfectly fine having the same SPDF. So i'm
looking at using the problem machine now to print only..
