    scanbox shutting down

    I maintain the printers in my office, 3 ricoh aficio 5501 pcl6. We have roughly 50 users. This problem pertains to only 1 user and 1 printer. He can not scan. I Replace him in the address book in WIM, uninstall and reinstall the printer, and everything works for 24 hours. Then it stops scanning again. Windows 7. Help?

    print driver shouldnt affect scanning.

    are you using the computer name for the path or the IP address of the computer? the computer may be changing IP addresses if you are going that route.

    the router may be dropping out on that port as well. may look into that.

    do you have password set up on pc? is he changing the password?

      i am using the computer name, when we get a computer from the home office, it has a site id preprogrammed, i am using that. There is a password set up in the pc, and it does match the one in WIM, In the pc, the password is listed as never expire, can not be changed.

        Never expire just means that Windows Server cannot require you to change the password. It does not prevent the user from changing the password.

        What SMB error code are you getting. To check, attempt a scan and wait for it to error out. Enter User Tools - Systems Settings - Interface Settings and click on the Pint Settings button at the top right hand on the screen. The last page will have the network log. The error should be one of the last entries.

        While in User Tools go to the address book, select the folder for the user with the problem and click Connection Test(Or is it Test Connection). you shoukd get either connection successful, authentication failure or cannot find destination.

        If it cannot find destination, check the naming policy used by the company. In some cases where the first eight characters of two or more computers are the same, Netbios name resolution can fail.

          Could it be possible that an anti-virus program is making changes overnight?

          The term "anti-virus program" is overused and misused quite a bit, as they do much more than guard against viruses. These apps also tend to magically shut down ports and protocols when you're not looking.

          Sometimes re-enabling these ports or protocols will work until the app does its thing again.

          As an example, I had this same issue (sorta) with a Streamline customer. Their server anti-virus app kept shutting down UDP port 1434, which SQL Server required. Once the port got whacked, Stramline stopped.

          We had to escalate to the anti-virus vendor to get it resolved.

          Just thinking that you may be seeing the same, or similar issue.

            Just thought of something else.

            It could also be a group policy that keeps turning off file sharing. Each time the GPO gets applied, it could shut down what's needed.

            It may effect only the one user because he/she is in a different AD group.

            For instance, I am in an admin group in my office, where I have rights to most things. Most users are one level below that. We have some users in a different group who are lucky to even be able to turn their computers on.

              Thank you for your help

              I am not getting an error message. It looks like it works, memory goes to 99%, then it stops. when i check, it says the scan is waiting, yet everyone else who uses the scanner has had no problem today.

              I do not know about the virus checker, company insists we use symantec.

              The port looks good, it is active

              I am not familiar with AD groups, but this is the #2 person in the office, and used to maintain the printers before I started, so I would think he has an advanced enough group.

              Since he used to maintain the printers, I would assume he knows not to change the password, but one can never tell.

                So I tried different things above, 3 test scans, none went through. rebooted the computer. All 3 scans went through.

                  Depending on the setting, it will make multiple attempts to send before it errors out. The default is 3 attempts with 15 minutes between attempts. You will not get an entry in the communication log until it errors out so you have to wait or change the retry settings. When the last attempt fails, you will get an error message on the screen, memory will return to 100%, scan file status will show failed and an entry will be placed in the communication with the SMB error code. You have to wait for it.

                    In a domain server managed environment, it is best to create a user on the server for the MFP, that way the MFP can use that domain login to get to any PC on the network without any problems!




                    PS--if it is not (or isn't) domain managed, you might need to add the MFP user to the "Auditing" section in the folder sharing!
                    Right click on shared folder, go to Security Tab->Click on "Advanced" button->Click "Auditing" tab, add the MFP user, and give use of "full control" for the shared folder. Make sure to "Apply" the changes before exiting! Some interesting situations this has fixed!

                      Normally if it is an authentication error, it errors out immediately with a notice on the screen to such. Frequently also asks to reenter login information.
