MP C6502 ops panel back light troubles.

    Hi All,
Got a MP C6502 back in our shop at the moment that has us all scratching our heads. It works fine until it goes into sleep mode then when you go to wake it up it all comes to life except the LCD back light. All the buttons and the touch screen work and if you shine a torch at it you can see the image on the LCD screen but the back light is as dead as a maggot. Power cycle the machine and it all comes good and the back light shines brightly until it goes to sleep again, then nothing.
So far we've swapped all the boards we can think of, controller, IPU, BICU etc. and updated all the firmware but nothing changes. I think we've got a corrupted NVRAM, any suggestions?

Only thing that comes close to it was a Metis wouldn't come out of power save. Firmware fix didn't cure it but a new PSU did but even the touch screen wouldn't respond on that unless you switched off/on.

I don't know about the NVRAM being the issue... have you tried a different op panel?

It could be a bad firmware module. Try reloading all firmware. You have to use individual modules. Package firmware usually only updates those modules that are not current and does not reload everything.

          Thanks for the replies guys,
Yes, we did try another ops panel, didn't fix it.
Yes, we did reload the engine and systems firmware individually, no difference.
So for last roll of the dice we'll change the PSU's and see what happens. If still no-go it will be new NVRAMS.
So stay tuned for the next installment!

I had said "ALL" firmware modules. If you don't want to load every one of the modules, at least do LCDC and Power Saving as they are more apt to be the cause than engine or system, especially since it happens when coming out of power save mode, though almost any module could cause it.

Point taken Slimslob, I got interrupted so many times I've forgotten which firmware I reloaded. I know I did the package, thought about it then loaded the main ones again individually, now I can't remember which ones they were.

Update the JAVA firmware . this model has an embedded Java on the controller. If the users does not need java for equitrac or other options . I recommend turning it off in SP MODE.

OK guys, finally got back to this one, next step was to swap out all the PSU boards, still no change. I'll now have another go at the firmware and see what changes the Java makes.

Hi Kannuki, I've had a skim thru the SP's and can't see anything that relates to Java, can you give me a hint what I'm looking for?

Sorry Slimslob, that didn't work either.
So just to recap, we've swapped every board we can think of as well as the ops panel. Reloaded all the firmware piece by piece and still the ops panel back light refuses to come out of low power mode.

                          NVRAM's here we come!

New set of NVRAMs seems to have done the job. I'll keep this box in the workshop for a few more days before I return it to the customer just to make sure its happy.
