    This copier really hates me
Since I ran out of ideas I just gave it a SP5801 ram clear, it now just sits there glowering at me and just says D2 jam.
No paper at D2 but it won't reset.

      Check the fuser exit sensor.

Thanks Slimslob, but it turned out to be the sensor on the fuser feed in or "Paper Remaining Sensor"as Ricoh call it. You have to calibrate it with SP 1134.
Now waiting on RA to come up with some more frimwar for the ops panel as what they have on Rapnet seems to be a lot older then whats loaded onto newer copiers.
Shame we can't upload load firmware from the copier like we could with the old AF340 which was the only good thing that pile of junk had going for it.

Re: MP C6502 ops panel back light troubles.

          The story so far..........
This copier sat in my workshop for months and every time I walked past it I tried something different but still no change. I CRAMMED it, RAMMED, FRAMMED it and damned it! still no change. I was starting to think this copier was possessed especially when you went to power it down, hit the button, then the back light came on and lit up the "Turning off in 3 min"message.

Eventually I admitted defeat and packed it up and sent it back to Ricoh Oz for their Tech Support to sort it out. And let me tell you that was very depressing to admit after 30 years in this game I'd been beaten by a copier.

Now three months later on..................they can't fix it either!!!!! .

They've tried everything I tried and a few more things besides, think they've got it beat, leave it a day or too just to make sure and it does its little trick again.

          I feel better now

We are now in negotiations for a replacement, RA want to give us a S/H unit but we're hanging out for a new one.

Believe it or not, it's fixed!!

Turned out we were all chasing the wrong problem, the back light failing to turn on was only a secondary issue. One of the clever guys in NTS happened to notice that the scanner lamp wasn't turning on at wake-up and pursued that line of inquiry. When he replaced the SIO board the bloody thing work properly for the first time in over 9 months.
Why does a faulty SIO stop the back light coming on when that board has absolutely nothing to do with the ops panel I hear you ask? Apparently the microprocessor is waiting for a signal from the CCD to say the exposure lamp has turned on and it's seen a white level check before it moves on to its next task which is to tell the ops panel to turn the back light on. Since it didn't get the OK it just sat there and waited.
Why it wasn't spitting codes to say the white level was crook no one knows.

My only consolation is that it also took the bright boys of NTS over a month to tumble on to the answer and that was more by luck then deductive reasoning.

                    Salutations ........ (well relief)...

What you described sounds like a further logical firmware issue, ie. not getting through the POST(power-on-self-test) initialise phase without
displaying any hardware related error code.

One for the factory keyboard tappers(firmware) to work on.
The next firmware update might output the problem error code for better diagnostics.

                    Any way it's fixed...

                      Well, almost fixed.
It didn't like the trip to Sydney and back and being pulled apart so many times.
