    Ricoh Aficio MFP 171

Uneven copies, light on front frame side.
Replaced PCU, OEM toner and I have cleaned Laser Unit. Would the transfer roller cause issues? uneven pressure with side door. Any help very much appreciated.

    Thanks Bruno.

    Is the machine level?
I can't say that I've ever seen the transfer roller do that, but I suppose that could happen if the pressure springs on one side of the roller were missing or the roller itself is damaged.
How's the gear on the end of the roller look?

How did you "clean the laser"? You will need to remove it (PITA) and disassemble it to get it clean. It is not protected very well and toner dust will get into the laser unit.

Hi, yes thank you I forgot to mention that the copier is level. Thanks for replying. Super frustrated. I have to say that when I clean laser unit the problem seemed to get worse.

Yes I snuck in removed power supply and cleaned unit without totally removing, just removed top silver plate and cleaned all mirrors.

There's a mylar 'flap' that tucks in under the Laser unit, and if you're not paying attention when you put the laser back in, it can stick up in front of the laser window and cause quality issues.
            (I've done it myself)

You said that copies are light on the front. What about printing such as counter sheet and service reports? If they are even from side to side, the problem is dirty optics causing white reference to not be read correctly.

Yes sorry, printing counter sheet. Light at front frame side. Sky shot same thing.

You either have dust or toner on the laser shield glass, dust or toner inside the laser housing on the mirrors and/or lenses, or you have uneven distribution of developer (more at the rear of the development roller than at the front). Uneven distribution could be from development gears being worm or the machine not being level. Use a bullseye level or a torpedo level on the platen glass.

Here is a silly question, but worth checking:

Are all the transfer roller springs present?

I had a tech remove and re-install a transfer unit, and the spring popped pass the bushing locator, which made the transfer assembly collapse on that side. Luckily we caught it early before it destroyed the transfer roller, as it was caught below the transfer roller to the one side.

Clean the hexagonal mirror very carefully,
you will notice a "white spot" of dust on every side of it, near the corners.

Hi aoe.... Pls let me know if this problem was sorted. If so what did u have to do? If not, may i suggest that you replace the LD unit itself and check. I've not experienced an issue like this so would like to know. Thanks
