Ricoh Aficio MP C3500 - Tray 1 out of service

Good Afternoon All,

Just signed up here and have had the Ricoh Aficio MP c3500 for about two years now. I bought it used and it has been a great printer.
Just today I tried printing and it said that tray 1 is out of paper. I checked and there is paper inside so I try to put tray back in its place and see what happens.
Unfortunately the printer keeps on saying it is out of paper and wont print from tray 1. I even tried to make a copy and still no luck.
How can I address this issue? I noticed that online people talking about sensors for the tray. How can I replace, repair or test out how to fix the tray 1 out of service issue.

the easiest way is to pull all paper from tray 1. power off machine (use the green power button, wait for it to quit blinking, then turn off main power switch). wait a minute, then power back on. put paper back in, and try that.

I tried this but still am having an issue.
It still says paper tray out of order.

there is a black flag that hangs down out of the top of the cavity where the tray goes. look at that flag, it may be missing or hung up. it should dangle and easily pushed up and gravity down.

Check the tray lift motor

Where is the tray lift motor please?
Also I try looking for a "black flag" and I cant find it anywhere near the Tray 1

if you have a tray 2, pull that cassette out and compare the two feed units, should be identical.

the lift motor is mounted behind the covers in the back side. but the gear to lift goes thru the frame to the cassette.

seems there’s a problem with the paper end feeler or paper end sensor

Pull the tray out and make sure there is no paper crumpled in behind the tray. It's not uncommon to find paper crushed behind the tray which prevents the lift motor from engaging the tray lift mechanism. You might get an error code or find that the copier disables the tray (and displays a message saying the tray is unavailable).

Also, you said you tried printing and the message 'out of paper' was displayed - are you sure it's not a paper size/type mismatch? Delete any print jobs, remove the network cable and go to the copy screen. Manually select tray 1, does it say 'Load paper' and change the start button from green to red?

Thanks everyone for your input. I finally saw the black flag and i also noticed that deep in the back there was half a paper crumbled up. I took the paper out and bam it works.
