If the paper starts to make it past that guide and then gets jammed, you might check the bushings or bearings for the rollers in that area. Maybe even pull the motor that drives those rollers out of the finisher, run it and see how it reacts when there's no load. While I am not sure, I suspect the difference in the amount time that motor drives those rollers between LEF and SEF paper might have something to do with this.
Then again, if the motor that drives those rollers stalls because it is defective or there are bound up rollers, I have seen that it is likely there will be unusual sounds coming from the finisher when those jams occur, thanks to the machine continuing to send drive pulses to the motor when it isn't able to turn those rollers. If the finisher doesn't sound any different when it works or when the paper jams, the preceding might be just so much nonsense. Sorry about that.

Not sure what you mean by paper face up, if its blank its should be fine either side. J027 and J028 are both "late" jams at the duplex inverter which means you should be hitting the Z1 area at the duplex entrance and jaming before it goes into the inverter. Couple things I would check is the condition of the switchback rollers, the grey ones that drive the paper paper drives into the top section then the rollers switch direction and feed into the inverter make sure they arent all dirty and slipping. Check the solenoid and spring for the switchback gate pawl. Check the wiring make sure nothing is cut, mainly the big wire at the rear side that has the large molex connector on it, that gets pretty tore up over time from opening and closing that lid its got some grey tape cover on it but remove the duplex unit and look over the rear side and wiring harnesses and machine connectors for any paper stuck in them.

The only thing is when its feeding wide edge for some reason the duplex does not know its long edge and is checking the sensor for SEF because the paper is not that long its registering late to the sensor, this could be pinching wiring or bad sensor, poor connection from duplex to machine.

If you have a spare machine if all else fails swap the whole duplex out and see if the problem persists that could eliminate or confirm that duplex is the problem.
