Recently I replaced the black drum unit a C5503. Now the black is completely washed out. I checked voltage and it seems OK. The machine doesn't seem to think anything is wrong, either. MUSIC and Procon outputs seem to be OK. No other color is affected. I attempted to replace the developer unit as well, but this did not change anything. I was hoping someone else had experience something similar and had some pointers.

Any chance the ground plate in the rear cover was damaged?Attached Files -
Re: C5503 - Washed out black after replacing drum unit
A lot of people forget to put the old rear plate back on, which will cause this.
Also, make sure you reset the drum counter, either in Process > Manual New Unit Set, or SP selection screen > PM Counter Reset (if this machine has it).Comment

Re: C5503 - Washed out black after replacing drum unit
I believe I was working with a model of drum unit manufactured before the defect that was listed in that tech pub. These drum units do not feature the back plate that I think that Ruben discussed. They have a small rear cover and a gear set that come off with three screws. I did forget to set the proper SP mode to 1 because I always forget which machines require it and which do not. We shall see when I return today.Comment

Re: C5503 - Washed out black after replacing drum unit
There is a small cover that commonly gets left off that has a bias connection in it. It does not come with the new drum and finds it's way into the trash easily. It will make a pale copy without it.Comment

Lo and behold, that is what that was. The rear cover that carries the bias terminal was removed but never replaced. I feel like such a rookie.Comment
