    MP C4504 OCR and GlobalScan

    Hi,

I have an install coming up with an MP C4504 and GlobalScan Serverless

It's no secret that Serverless can't do OCR; the Server version is required.

I'm wondering, though, if the OCR option was added to the MFP if it would carry through, if you will, to GlobalScan.

I've not yet seen a machine with the OCR option, so I'm trying to get my head around just how it works.

I just want to be prepared for when the inevetible comment comes up after it's all installed that "Why can't I search for text or copy from the scanned PDFs?"

It would be way easier to sell them the OCR kit than to have to move to the Server version of GlobalScan.

    Thanks!

You would be better off selling them OCR conversion software. Embedded OCR with searchable text loads the scan document to memory, on the MFP, then processes it for OCR/searchable text. The processing can takes minutes per page and the scanned document is not sent until all pages have been processed. Large documents can take as much as 30-60 minutes. You end up with customers calling in service calls because their scanned documents are not going through.

      Thanks for the reply.

That was kinda what I thought.

I wouldn't think that GlobalScan (Serverless) would really make a difference.

To top it off, GlobalScan is being used as a front end to pass the scans to Document Mall, and Doc Mall doesn't speak OCR, either.

That kind of slowdown could cause all kinds of grief.

      Thanks again. 😎

We've found that increasing the resolution really helps with the speed and accuracy of embedded OCR, up to a point. On a 4504 it shouldn't be too bad, we have a C2003 at a law office and it's brutally slow.

Nothing works quite so well that I can't totally disable it by trying to make it a little better.
